BROCKPORT – Unadilla Valley eighth-grader Bailey Shoemaker came away with a runner-up finish in the NYSPHSAA girls golf championships at Deerfield Golf and Country Club in Brockport. It’s the young golfer’s second straight second-place finish in the state championship tournament.
Topping Shoemaker was 2018 defending New York State Champion Melanie Green of Medina from Section VI.
A season ago, Shoemaker came from five strokes back to place second and shot a record-low 65 at Bethpage Yellow course in Long Island.
The Storm’s youngster – sporting her University of Southern California cap all-weekend – started the two-round tournament off with a 73, finishing the first round day just one stroke back of the leader Green, who ended her first day shooting an even par at Deerfield.
Shoemaker’s front-nine score of day one was even but she did reach 1-under-par after recording a birdie on the third hole. Back-to-back pars on four and five kept her at 1-under but a bogey on six brought her back to even.
On the par three eighth hole, the UV stand-out once again birdied, putting her a 1-inder before the final hole of the front-night. She ended up with a bogey on nine, bringing her once again to even at the turn.
Three straight pars kept her on track for a par score but a bogey on 13 brought her to 1-over for the first round. Shoemaker did have another 1-over score on 15 but with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole brought her to 1-over for the first round and one stroke behind the leader going into Sunday’s second round.
Shoemaker’s second day started off with bogey-bogey but as all golfers were on Sunday, she was battling the weather elements of hard rain and strong gusts of wind for the first few holes.
The Storm eighth-grader, after dropping to 4-over-par by hole eight, birdie on nine and started the turn making a run.
She stayed at 3-over for three more holes before bogeying 13 but quickly answered with a birdie on 14.
Things began to get interesting for Shoemaker and leader Green by the 16th hole. The leader was at 2-under after 15, leaving her again one stroke ahead of the UV golfer.
Both Green and Shoemaker birdied 16, keeping the score close. Both pared 17, leaving one hole of play between the two, who were playing in the same group all weekend.
On the 18th, Shoemaker put the ball on the green closer to the hole than Green, leaving her in good position for a birdie. Green, who had the further putt, took her shot at a birdie attempt but left it just shy of the whole. Shoemaker sunk her putt, pulling her within on stroke of Green – who had an attempt at par less than a foot from the hole.
“The greens were tricky all weekend long,” said Shoemaker’s head coach Carl Convis. “They didn’t appear like that were but they definitely provided their twists and turns for the golfers.”
If Green missed the close putt, she would have had the opportunity to tap in for a bogey finish on the 18th but it would have also forced a playoff hole to determine a state champion.
With all eyes watching her finish her round, Green drained the putt, placing it in the center of the cup and secured her second straight championship.
Shoemaker and Green embraced in a hug after to congratulate eachother. The two top-competitors see each other outside of the high school golfing season at tournaments during the summer months. “The two are great friends and they always battle on the course as they are both on the United States Golf Association Youth tournament circuit.
Shoemaker’s 2-over finish was four strokes a head of third-place Alice Hodge of Ursuline Academy.
With Shoemaker not even in high school yet and Green only in her junior year, the two are expected to be near the top of state ranks again next season.
