Norwich PD warns residents to lock doors amidst series of nighttime thefts

NORWICH – The Norwich Police Department is warning city residents to keep their vehicles locked and review security camera footage for trespassers as nighttime lawn thefts and vehicle break-ins are on the rise.

According to NPD Deputy Chief Scott Burlison, many thefts can be deterred by locking doors, investing in security systems, and by being aware of who is on your property.

"If you see someone walking down the street with a lawn chair in the middle of the night, that very well might be a clue that there's been a theft," said Burlison. "If you hear or see something suspicious, call us so we can send a patrol over to check things out."

He said a rise in break-ins isn't uncommon once the summer hits, and the majority of thefts have occurred at night in the southern part of the city.

"Bring in your valuables from your vehicles, and keep your doors locked," said Burlison. "I would also encourage that if there is any kind of larceny from your property to let us know.

"We may come across that stolen piece of property, and that could lead to the recovery of other people's belongings as well."

He suggested (for the residents that have them) to ensure automatic lights are working, and that residents review their camera footage to see if someone trespassed, even if there wasn't a theft.

He added that in the case a resident catches someone stealing their property, the resident should call 911, describe the person to the best of their ability, and keep track of their direction of travel if they leave the area.

Burlison said, "Do not confront the person. It's not worth engaging them; and if you've called 911, help is on the way."

He said residents have reported that during the overnight hours, assorted lawn decorations have been stolen from their front lawns, backyards and even front porches.

Decorations stolen thus far include solar lights, lawn statues, decorative metal pieces with flowers, garden gnomes, and lawn chairs.

"Many homeowners have home security camera systems or motion area lighting covering the exterior of their homes," said Burlison. "These types of security items are good deterrents to thefts like these."

Residents are reminded that if they hear or see anything suspicious in their neighborhoods during the overnight hours, contact the Norwich Police Department at 334-2424 so it can be investigated.
