$45,000 bail set in stabbing case
NORWICH – A Norwich man facing felony assault charges after he allegedly stabbed a victim who confronted him for stealing loose change from a parked car, appeared in Chenango County Court Friday to request bail be set in his case.
Gary L. Nichols Jr., 39, of Norwich, was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, petit larceny, trespass, and first-degree escape.
Due to his previous felony conviction he had to appear in Chenango County Court to request bail.
Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir set bail at $45,000 cash.
According to court documents, at approximately 2:15 a.m. Saturday, July 20, on Plymouth Street in the City of Norwich, Nichols was caught stealing loose change from a blue Cadillac by the vehicle’s owner.
Chenango County District Attorney Michael Ferrarese said the case “was a petit larceny that turned into a vicious assault all due to the defendant’s actions, and additional charges may come after a thorough review of all of the evidence.”
Ferrarese said the two victims were hurt after attempting to stop Nichols from fleeing the area, before police arrived.
