Man arrested for DWI after running over pedestrian at Unadilla Motocross
COLUMBUS – New York State Police arrested a Utica man on Friday following investigation of a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian on State Route 8 in the Town of Columbus.
Troopers arrested 31-year-old Edward D. Burnett for two felony charges of driving while ability impaired with a child 15 or under as the passenger, and a single felony charge of vehicular assault in the second degree.
Burnett is accused of hitting and seriously injuring a 20-year-old South Carolina male shortly before 9 p.m. Friday at the Unadilla Motocross event.
Troopers say they located the victim on the shoulder of State Route 8. An off-duty Sidney Police Officer was on scene tending to the victim and troopers assisted with first aid until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in critical condition.
Troopers found that Benett showed signs of being impaired at the time of the crash. He had three passengers with him; a 30-year-old female and two children, ages four and eight.
Burnett was arrested and arraigned in Columbus Town Court then remanded to the Chenago County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.
