Improve Norwich Now to co-host recovery and wellness 5k
NORWICH – Members of Improve Norwich Now met Wednesday to discuss upcoming events, including “Chenango’s Recovery and Wellness Glow 5k Run/Walk” to be held next month.
The 5k’s registration opens at 6:30 p.m., and the race begins at 7:30 p.m. on September 21 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. The event will be hosted by the Suicide Prevention Coalition and Improve Norwich Now, and it will be part of the Run Chenango Series.
According to Improve Norwich Now Co-Founder Pastor Jen Westervelt, the Chenango County Suicide Prevention Coalition (CCSPC) was formed in 2014 and functions as an entirely volunteer organization.
Westervelt said CCSPC members are working to mobilize the community to take an active role in suicide prevention, and by working together with the community to provide suicide prevention training and the coordination of suicide prevention resources. The goal is to minimize the impact of suicide on people and communities of Chenango County.
Westervelt said I.N.N. hopes coming together at this event will raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding addiction, mental illness, and suicide.
“We need to stand together as a community if we want to make a difference,” said Westervelt. “Along with the 5k, we’ll also have carnival games, water stations, face painters, and more for people to enjoy.”
She said for those who are interested, registering for the event by August 6 will allow participants to purchase a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt. Everyone who runs will get glow sticks, she added; but this is a way for individuals who want something special and help support the race.
Those who are interested in registering for the event may visit glowrun5k.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=12604, and those who have questions may reach out to improvenorwichnow@gmail.com for more information.
