NORWICH – Despite raining five out of six days, Chenango County Fair organizers said this year's fair was a success that drew approximately 35,000 participants.

The fair was held from Aug. 6 to Aug. 11 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich. The festival included a variety of events, such as the fair's first-ever internationally sponsored bull riding competition, demolition derbies, and a concert performance from Sidewalk Prophets (attended by nearly 1,000 people).

Chenango County Agriculture Society President Mary Weidman said this year's fair may have been plagued by rain, but "all in all, it was a success."

"We had solid attendance throughout the fair," said Weidman. "The superintendents were happy with the event, and there were about 35,000 people that attended."

She said new things attendees enjoyed this year were pony rides with Sprint Wind, and a petting zoo with kangaroos and turtles.

"We were especially happy to have the New York State Maple Queen in attendance," said Weidman. "Kaitlyn Boice, of Cooper Hill Maple in Marathon, was named this year's New York State Maple Queen in January during the Maple Producer's Mid-Winter Classic at the State Fairgrounds, and she had a great time assisting Amanda Walling and family at the Chenango Area Maple Producers booth in Exhibition Hall."

"Another one of our events, an Elvis tribute artist named Aric McKowan, did an excellent job with his two-hour show this year," said Weidman. "It was held at the entertainment tent on Sunday. He saw a decent crowd during his performance."

She said the horse race event also went well, especially considering four other fairs hosted harness racing at the same time.

She added that although the number of horse racers was down, the Chenango County Fair had a better turnout than other fairs.

"We continue to make improvements at our fair, with improved sound and new blacktop this year," said Weidman. "We’re always looking for constructive feedback on each year’s events through our email, website, letters, or phone calls."

She said a major goal of the fair each year is to promote Chenango's agriculture and outdoors.
