Afton/Harpursville nets two in season opening win

Norwich falls to Oneonta

SIDNEY – To open up their 2019 season, the Afton/Harpursville boys soccer team took down the host Sidney Warriors with a final score of 2-1.
Damien Terrell and Elijah Baciuska both scored for Afton/Harpursville while teammate Bobby Mercilliott was recorded with the assist on the two goals.
Connor Bacon found the back of the net on a penalty kick for the Warriors but it was the host team’s lone goal of the day.
Afton/Harpursville (1-0) is now off until September 3 when they play on their own pitch against Bainbridge-Guilford. Game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start time.
Oneonta 12, Norwich 0
ONEONTA – The youth of the Norwich Purple Tornado was displayed in Oneonta Wednesday morning and the host Yellowjackets took full advantage in their 12-0 win over the visiting team.
Eight different players for Oneonta registered a goal in Wednesday’s season opener for both teams. As the 3-time Section IV title winners, the Yellowjackets wasted no time picking up the win to start 1-0 in their journey for their fourth consecutive sectional championship.
Oneonta held a 4-0 lead at halftime and took a total of 35 shots by the conclusion of the contest. Norwich, a team full of first-year varsity players, were held to zero in both the shots and corners column.
Cooper Burton, who is in his first season as the Purple Tornado’s man between the posts, came away with 14 assists for the game.
Coming off the bench to lead the offense was the Yellowjackets’ Bradley Jacobs, ending the contest with a hat trick and an assist. Colleagues Nate Kuhlmann – who added an assist to his statline – and Finley Oliver each tallied two goals in the win.
Also scoring for the home team were Matt Shultz (1-2) and Alex Bitterman (1-1). Tanner Russin and Cecilio Torres also found the back of the net while teammates Dylan Davis, Max Madej and Sam Moore each had an assist.
Norwich (0-1) does not have a game scheduled until Wednesday, September 4. It is then the Tornado will look to rebound from the loss as they take on Chenango Valley at 4:30 p.m.
