NORWICH – The young Lady Tornado team took another early season lump with a 4-1 loss to the Chenango Valley Warriors.
CV’s Aubrey Marroquin racked up three goals in the first half on three well-timed passes from teammate Sara Marinaro as the Warriors captured the early lead. Marinaro was rewarded for her first half passing efforts following the intermission with a ball finding the back of the net for Chenango Valley’s final goal of the afternoon.
Prior to the Warriors’ fourth score of the game, Norwich’s Sydney Coggins registered her second goal of the season after carrying a Mackenzie Hess pass to the left baseline of the field.
Coggins used her sound and quick footwork to put a move on the CV defender and fire a hard dribbler past opposing keeper Maddi Trislot. As the ball rolled across the field, it crossed the end-line for the Tornado’s lone goal despite the effort by the Warriors defense to keep the ball out.
With starting goalkeeper Halea Eaton out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game, Norwich head coach Doug Coggins pulled up freshman keep Maddie Vaughn. Seeing 12 shots, Vaughn stopped seven Chenango Valley attempts in her varsity debut.
“We showed better fitness level for our second outing,” said Coach Coggins. “Each girl really tried and did not quit. One of our issues, however, is the inability to remember the little easy things. We have other things we need to work on as we are a work in progress and a very young team.”
The Tornado’s head coach also went on to say that the forwards had looks at the goal from both side of the field and his team is close to scoring more.
Hess, Sydney Coggins and Taylor McCarthy all had shots on goal against the Warriors.
Next up for Norwich is Susquehanna Valley on Thursday. The Tornado will host the Sabers for a 4:30 p.m. game time. Norwich also has the Greene Girls Soccer Tournament on their schedule for this weekend, giving the team four games in five days.

Stockbridge Valley 4, Otselic Valley 3 (Overtime)
MUNNSVILLE – The Lady Vikings of Otselic Valley started off their 2019 campaign under first-year head coach Lori Wood holding their own against Stockbridge Valley, sending the game into overtime. The Vikings, however, fell 4-3 Tuesday after a Cougars goal in the second 10 minute overtime session.
OV jumped out to a strong start to take an advantage early in the game. The movement and control of the ball by the Lady Vikings contributed to their 3-0 lead by the end of the first half, according to Wood.
Cassie Agren to crossed a ball to Payton Guernsey in the center, who then put a shot attempt on goal. Crashing the far post on the shot was teammate Grace Casta and as the ball looked to be sailing past the goal, Casta gave the ball one final touch for the 1-0 lead.
Morgan Smith tallied the second goal for the visiting Vikings, converting a penalty kick and Cassidy Will tacked on the third and final score of the first half off another Guernsey pass.
Playing the game without any subs, Wood knew her Lady Vikings were going tire as Stockbridge Valley pushed a back-and-forth game on OV.
The Cougars caught up in the second half with three unanswered goals but the Lady Vikings didn’t give in to the host team. As the fatigue for Otselic Valley was in full force, the visiting team didn’t give in preventing the game-winner for Stockbridge Valley to cross the end-line. as they kept the Cougars from scoring a winning goal in the seconds half.
Not backing down, even with little to no energy, OV held on as long as they could but it fell in closing minutes of the second overtime session.
“We never backed down,” said Wood. “Even when [Stockbridge Valley] scored the winning goal, our girls fought until the end. I’m proud of each and everyone of them.”
Wood went on to say that Victoria Reichard’s solid defensive play and Lexi Hazzard’s goalkeeping was a large contributing factor for Otselic Valley’s close game effort.
Hazzard stopped 13 shots by the Cougars throughout the game.
Otselic Valley (1-0) looks to carry their play over into next game, which is slated for Friday at 7 p.m. against Morrisville-Eaton.
