Improve Norwich Now partners with community to provide financial education
NORWICH – Improve Norwich Now has partnered with other organizations in the community to offer nine classes on financial literacy with the only cost for attendees being approximately $100 for course materials.
The course named, Financial Peace University (FPU), will span over nine weeks, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, at the Norwich YMCA. The course will then continue each Thursday until the nine weeks are over.
According to Improve Norwich Now Co-Founder Jen Westervelt, this opportunity to become financially literate and make a plan to get out of debt was made available thanks to Canasawacta Valley Free Methodist Church and the Norwich YMCA. Westervelt said FPU is a course designed by renowned financial expert Dave Ramsey to allow people to get out of debt and save money.
"I’m so excited about the partnerships that we’re forming with some many great organizations and entities in our area," she said. "Everybody can benefit from courses like this, and anybody can take it because its free."
She said the only cost associated with the courses is an approximately $100 materials fee which covers required reading materials and can be paid online at www.bit.ly/cvfreeFPU.
She added one of the concepts taught at the university focuses on not spending more than you make, but many people don't know how much they're really spending.
"Like Dave Ramsey likes to say, every dollar has a name," said Westervelt. "This course helps people budget, save, and pay off debt."
She said throughout the nine weeks, attendees will learn how to save their first thousand dollars, pay off debt, save three to six months of expenses for emergencies, invest in retirement, save for college funds, pay of a mortgage early, build wealth, give, and more.
"My husband and I took Financial Peace University 12 years ago," said Westervelt. "Since then we’ve managed to become debt free, and we hope others can too."
"We know what its like to be a working class family, and to make changes so we don’t have to be trapped by debt."
She said one of the major issues Ramsey found was people don’t know how to budget. She added that this course economic principles easy to understand.
"You can be generous as long as you don’t have debt," said Westervelt. "We hope as many people as possible take advantage of this free course."
