Norwich's YMCA to offer new, "Fit for Fall" program
NORWICH – The Norwich YMCA is offering a fitness program this fall to help individuals looking to lose weight, change their bodies, and get fit.
According to YMCA program coordinators, the Y's Fit for Fall is a 10 week fitness and nutrition challenge to get participants real and lasting results. This program is individualized to meet the needs of anyone of any age or ability.
Individual informational meetings, sign ups and registration is going on now through September 15th We will start with a practice week to make sure everyone understands how to do it and then the 10 week challenge will start after that.
Officials said the challenge for every participant is to fill out weekly score sheets that track their activity/exercise as well as their dietary choices. All activity has a point value attached to it and a point system is also used to help participants eat optimally. The more points a participant gets each week indicates their progress towards a healthier lifestyle.
Shannon Gawronski, the health and fitness director at the YMCA, said by using this program, you will get real results, and after ten weeks, eating well and being more active will be more of a habit or a new way of life for you, and hopefully you will continue to do so after the challenge ends.
Michele O’Brien said, “I moved to Norwich seven years ago and felt that I should get involved with the YMCA because I was, in my opinion, 15 pounds overweight. It was then that I participated in my first fitness challenge and lost those 15 pounds, all while making new friends and having fun. I’m happy to say that I kept them off too.”
Representatives said Shannon Gawronski and her assistant, Patty, will guide and motivate you through the ten week program. The challenge starts with a practice week. During this week you will go to the Y to get your initial body composition assessment done, to use as a baseline.
You will also learn how to use your activity and food log forms, so you get used to using them before the actual challenge begins.
Participants will award themselves points for making better food choices and increasing their activity each week until they reach a level that’s optimal for them, said organizers. "It’s that easy. The forms document the amount and types of activity you perform, as well as the quality of your diet, said Gawronski.
Organizers said these forms are turned into Gawronski at the end of each week and the information provided is used to coach you through the rest of the challenge. They added that you will receive feedback every week, usually by email, telling you what you are doing well and how you might be able to improve.
At the end of five weeks, you will get the midterm body assessment, so you can see how the program is helping you, and there is a final full body assessment at the end of the ten week program too. This challenge gets real results that you will be able to see from your body composition assessment data, as well as how well your clothes fit, and how much stronger you feel.
“This fitness challenge was the best. The support and camaraderie was heart felt. I never felt alone doing this thanks to the guidance from Shannon and Patty,” said Nina Alexopoulos, who participated in last spring’s fitness challenge.
