Early Moravia lead, costly turnovers hand Bobcats loss
BAINBRIDGE – Before Bainbridge-Guilford’s game with Moravia – a rematch from week eight in 2018 – Bobcats’ head coach Israel Lorimer said his team needed to take care of the ball as B-G forced up the ball in the 2018 clash.
With five turnovers in Friday’s contest, Moravia took an early 14-0 lead and held on for the remainder of the game to take the win over host Bainbridge-Guilford, 22-14.
The Bobcats were held scoreless in the first half but in the third, running back Garrett Ives punched the ball into the end zone from nine yards out with 1:35 left in the quarter.
Entering the fourth and final 15 minutes of play, B-G trailed the Blue Devils 22-6 after Moravia’s Kyle Witten tossed a 50 yard pass down field to receiver Nick Johnson and Hunter Purty converted the two-point try.
The Blue Devils’ Witten threw for all three touchdowns in the game scored by the visiting team – all three went to different receivers. The quarterback was 7-for-18 with 185 yards for the contest. Purty ended with 19 yards on the ground but caught the four passes intended for him and totaled 110 yards.
Only minutes into the fourth, the Bobcats drove the ball done the field and Ives capped off the possession with a three yard run across the goal line to make the score 22-12. The running back added two points with his conversion rush but his run with 10:35 left finished off all scoring by both teams.
Ives rushed for 20 carries for 81 yards – his longest run for nine yards – and the Bobcats’ two touchdowns.
Jakob Heath picked up 50 yards on five plays for B-G and Damien Farberman tallied 43 yards on 10 touches.
The Bobcats quarterback Hadien Burns was 6-for-17 in the air with 80 yards but threw three interceptions in the loss. Receiver Trent Thornton, caught two passes thrown his way for a total of 21 yards while colleague Jayson Oefelein had once catch for 34 yards.
Defensively, B-G had four players with three tackles. Gabe Sherman recorded two wrap-ups and had and interception. Teammates Ives and Parker Finch came up with fumble recoveries while both finished the game with three tackles each.
Bainbridge-Guilford (0-1) travels to Watkins Glen/Odessa-Montour on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
