NORWICH – Opening the season with one of the toughest opponents on the schedule, the Purple Tornado Volleyball team took on the Windsor Black Knights Tuesday at home.
In front of a packed gym, Norwich held their own against the Black Knights, taking one of four games but fell by a final of 3-1.
“I’m overwhelmed with joy,” said Tornado head coach Shelly Alger. “I’m extremely happy with the way we played against Windsor. They are always a tough team to play against and we made some big improvements from our tournament over the weekend. I am really proud of this group of girls right now.”
Norwich opened up the first game, keeping the Black Knights close but fell by four points in the 25-21 final. The Purple Tornado then came out in game two firing as they took a quick lead over Windsor in the set.
As the two teams went back and forth, Norwich pulled away at the end to take the game 25-21.
In game three, both teams went on small runs with Windsor starting to run away with it as they inched closer to the 25 points needed. At 17-11, Alger called a timeout to regroup her girls and it paid off as Norwich made a run to come back.
With the scoring hanging at 21-24, the Tornado put together two more points before the Black Knights closed out the set at 25-23.
In the fourth set, Windsor cruised to 25-13 win to take the best-of-five match, three games to one.
Alger stated the team struggled with hitting their serves during the match, going 68-85 throughout the four games. “We, as a team, strive to reach 92-percent on serves. [Tuesday], we missed several in the first and third games and if we hit them inbounds, we could have very well been on the winning side of the match.”
Despite serving, Norwich played well together and came up big on the defensive side of the match as Lauren Squires finished with six blocks – a stat that usually ends up with one to two a game – and Mia Maiurano blocking two Windsor Kill attempts. Libero Megan Lindridge ended the night with six digs.
Squires also had a big day at the net offensively, scoring seven kills. Samantha Binelli added six and Marissa Ramey tallied four for the night. Francesca Salerno dished out 10 assists and Madelyn Morris served up five aces in the match.
Windsor was led by Mackenzie Williams’ 11 kills and four aces. Nicole Rose added eight aces while teammates Sofia Peret and Karissa Decosse combined for 26 assists.
Norwich took to the court for the first time this season at the Union-Endicott tournament Saturday. The Tornado fell to Livionia in the first match but quickly turned the momentum around to beat Marcellus and Chenango Valley. With the 2-1 pool play record, Norwich was placed in the silver bracket and fell to Maine-Endwell in the first round of the bracket.
“All teams we played were tough,” said Alger. “The girls struggled a little bit and we needed to make some adjustments prior to [Tuesday]’s match.”
The Tornado (0-1) will play host to Elmira Friday night at 6:30 p.m. and a number of teams Saturday for the annual early season tournament. Action on Saturday begins at 9 a.m.
