Slow start turns into shutout win for Lady Trojans field hockey

Lady Marauders falls short in comeback
GREENE – After opening up the 2019 season with 2-0 road loss to Burnt Hill/Ballston Lake, the Lady Trojans of Greene responded with a big win in front of the home crowd, shutting out the Windsor Black Knights 6-0 Tuesday night.
The Trojans took eight shots in the first half of the game but only found the back of the cage once. Olivia Kennedy fired the first of her two goals scored in the game by Windsor’s Miranda Bickham after receiving a pass from Greene teammate Kenzie Drew with 16:51 remaining in the half.
“We had a slow start in the first half,” said Greene’s head coach Christine Battgalini. “We had plenty of opportunities in the half, but couldn’t convert. We made some adjustments and began to score more as the second half went on.”
Those changes Battaglini and her squad made led to a large amount of possession time in the offensive half of the turf and 15 opportunities at the goal. Five attempts from Greene players ending up in the back of the net in a span of 18 and a half minutes.
Starting the second half scoring stretch was Jess Unkel recorded her first of the night on a penalty stroke. Unkel scored a second goal with 7:48 remaining in the contest.
The Trojans senior had a big night distributing the ball, delivering passes on two goals in between her two tallies. Receiving the first of Unkel’s two assists was Kennedy, recording her second of the night.
Kylie Peck took the second assist from Unkel’s stick with 9:55 left. Just over two minutes later, Peck returned the favor by serving up the pass for the second goal by the Trojans’ senior.
Unkel added a third assist as Greene’s Paige Collins capped off the six goal performance for the home team.
“Our midfield played extremely well and we had a lot of players with goals and assists which is great,” said Battaglini.
Windsor’s keeper Miranda Bickham saw a lot of action between the posts. As the Trojans’ took a total of 23 shots, Bickham stopped 14 with some being what Battaglini noted as great saves. “Bickham was strong for them and prevented many more shots from going in,” the head coach added.
The win was a nice rebound for Greene from Saturday’s loss to Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake.
In the weekend game, the Trojans’ outshot the Spartans 13-9 but no attempts passed by the opponents’ goalie.

The Trojans have two days to prepare for their annual Barrows and Bromley Field Hockey Tournament, where they will host Maine-Endwell, Whitney Point and Afton/Harpursville – all three coming off of 2018 New York State Championship Final Four appearances.
Greene sees Whitney Point in the first round matchup at 7 p.m. while Maine-Endwell and Afton/Harpursville meet before at 5 p.m.

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville coach Christie Layman and her players were looking forward to playing Morrisville-Eaton prior to the start of the season, hoping to avenge their loss from a year ago. After Morrisville-Eaton held a 3-1 lead in the first half, the Lady Marauders attempted a comeback in the second but fell short in the 5-3 loss Tuesday afternoon.
M-E’s Emily Stewart and Lily Orth combined for the three first half goals by the visiting team with Orth scoring two in the final four and a half minutes.
Prior to the two late goals, Morrisville-Eaton held a 1-0 lead but Sherburne-Earlville’s Alison Smith tied the game with 8:35 left in the first.
Orth recorded a hat trick early in the second half when teammate Delaney Kohl sent a pass in the forwards’ direction, giving the visiting team the 4-1 advantage.
Smith answered 10 minutes later, cutting the deficit down to two with 15:31 remaining in the contest.
McKenzie Newton of Morrisville-Eaton tacked on the fifth and final goal two minutes after Smith’s second goal of the game to once again give M-E a three goal margin.
Trailing late in the game and time winding down to catch up, S-E’s Smith found colleague Alexis James with a pass with 9:38 left to make the score 5-3.
With the Marauders hoping to tack on two more in the time remaining, their attempts came up empty, ending the game at the two goal difference.
Morrisville-Eaton took just three shots more than S-E and Marauders’ goalkeeper Taylor Homann finished the game with six saves. Coach Layman also noted that both Katie Keyes and Madisyn Deinhoffer made key defensive play during the contest.
Sherburne-Earlville travels to New York Mills Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
