OXFORD – Continuing a poplar attraction, the Peila Family Farm will again turn their vast corn field into an elaborate maze for seasonal visitors.

The family said mazes were becoming more popular and starting a craze in New York State.

The Peila family opened the maze, an intricate network of twists and turns carved into nine acres of corn, last Saturday. Though the correct pathway can be walked in only 20 minutes, most wandering maze-goers will require about one hour to travel through more than three miles of twists, turns and decision points.

The maze will give visitors the chance to get lost on Sept. 7 through Oct. 27. Hours of operation are weekends, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Field trip hours, during weekdays, are available by reservation. The location is 162 Kilroy Road, Oxford, just off County Road 27.

According to a representative of the family, they hope to challenge the wits of those seeking to find the one exit from their mind-boggling puzzle, a unique source of good farming fun for adults and children alike.

As a tribute to its location, and in celebration of the 80th anniversary, the maze is designed in the shape of the Wizard of Oz.

The maze offers something for everyone. Open both day and night, the maze caters to school field trips during the day and has created an elementary education campaign that includes customized ag-in-the-classroom lesson plans and activity sheets for teachers, discounted field trip opportunities and an 'agricultural passport' that integrates education into the maze experience and helps guide students along the correct pathway.

A series of 'passports' are available for church groups, Girl and Boy Scouts, 4-Hers, corporate groups and the general public. Each containing ten questions that quiz the user on one of a variety of subjects, those who answer the questions correctly will receive clues that guide them along the correct path to the exit.

Beginning in October, the maze will take on a haunted twist. In addition to the spooks that will be lurking in the corn at night, families can come enjoy the bonfire and treats at a snack shack.

The Peila View Farm will also be part of the Tri-County Farm Trail this year. The Farm Trail runs Oct. 5 to 6 and we will be open to greet visitors from 11a.m to 5 p.m. Regular admission is required. The farm will include an open barn on that weekend were families can take a hayride down the hill to the dairy facilities.

Peila View Farm is part of the Maize family. The Maize Company is owned by Brett Herbst, who has designed more than 2,000 mazes since first introducing the concept to Utah in 1996.

Cost is $7 for ages 3 and up, and free for kids 2 and under. Discounts are offered for families, groups and field trips of 20 or more. For more information or to make reservations, call 413-548-5227 or on facebook at Peila View Farm.
