Chenango Sheriff's Office: Man stabbed coworker and fled scene

OTSELIC – The Chenango County Sheriff's office responded to a stabbing in the Town of Otselic Wednesday, after a co-worker stabbed another during an argument.

Police later arrested Howard C. Williams, 49, from the Bronx, for felony assault. The victim is in stable condition.

According to information provided at the Town of Smyrna Court during Williams' arraignment, the defendant admitted he stabbed the victim but claimed he was trying to defend himself after being attacked. The court remanded him to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on $10,000 cash bail.

However, police said Williams overreacted to the incident by stabbing the victim and that he fled the scene.

Chenango Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting said the men were working together and cutting wire when a conflict broke out between them.

“There was a conflict and he (Williams) overreacted to it.”

Williams fled the scene of the stabbing, but was later taken into custody at a motel a few hours later in the Town of McGraw by members of the New York State Police and Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Otselic Valley School District went into lockdown as a precaution as police searched for the suspect.

Sheriff's Detective Sergeant Gary Miller told the court the victim was stabbed three times in his right side ribcage area. Investigators also said Williams had made oral admissions to police.

According to Cutting at about 10:18 a.m. on September 11 members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Town of Otselic.

During the course of an investigation it was determined a male victim was stabbed multiple times by a coworker at a cellular phone tower location on Flanagan Road in the Town of Otselic.

The victim was transported via private transportation to South Otselic to seek medical attention. He was treated by members of the Otselic Volunteer Fire Department and airlifted to SUNY Upstate Hospital where he is in serious, but stable condition, reported police.

The Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Technicians searched the scene and recovered a knife police believe was used in the stabbing.

“It is outstanding work on the part of the detectives and the cooperation from area law enforcement in resolving the case,” said Cutting.
