NEW YORK – Last month 40 democratic judicial delegates gathered in Binghamton to nominate Norwich local Claudette Newman to run for State Supreme Court for the 6th Judicial District.
Officials said she received unanimous support, and continues to campaign in the 6th Judicial District’s 10 counties—Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Madison, Otsego, Schuyler, Tioga and Tompkins.
“Having 40 delegates step up to support my candidacy is a great way to start this campaign,” said Newman. “I’m looking forward to campaigning throughout the judicial district’s ten counties to bring my message of fairness before the court and commitment to the law to the voters.”
Newman has close to 20 years of experience practicing in State Supreme Court. From 1999 through 2017, Newman served as the Principal Law Clerk for the now retired State Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd.
As Dowd’s Principal Law Clerk, she reviewed all the cases that came before the court including matrimonial, municipal, zoning, personal injury, contract, mental health, felony criminal and Family Court cases.
She provided in-depth research and legal analysis for Judge Dowd and drafted the court’s decisions. Throughout 2018, she worked with three other Supreme Court justices—Judge Brian Burns, Judge John Lambert and Judge Ferris Lebous.
Newman is now the court attorney for the Chenango County Court, a multi-bench court, where she handles criminal and civil cases as well as cases from the County’s Family and Surrogate’s Court. She also sits on the bench as the Town Justice for Butternut Town Court in Otsego County.
“I’m confident that the voters will see my legal experience as well as my commitment to our community as key factors in supporting my candidacy,” said Newman.
Newman has served as President, Past President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary of the Chenango County Bar Association. She is a founding member of the Del-Chen-O Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of New York State.
She is also a member of the Otsego County Bar Association and a member of the New York State Bar.
Newman was born and raised in the judicial district. She is a graduate of Albany Law School (1994) and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Binghamton University (1991).
She and her husband, Larry Smith, stayed in the area to raise their three children, twins Ethan and Sadra, and their older sister, Scarlett, here.
