Norwich fights off sting from Yellowjackets for win

Oxford takes three against Greene
ONEONTA – After securing a game one victory over the Oneonta Yellowjackets on the road Thursday night, the Norwich volleyball team lost the next two and were one more game away from being defeated in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional match. The Lady Purple Tornado said not so fast, firing back with two straight wins in sets four and five to return home with a 3-2 victory over their rivals.
The first three games were won by a margin of two or three points but the final two games, where Norwich stole the road win from the host Yellowjackets, were won by a difference of nine (25-16) and 12 points (25-13).
Defensively, the Tornado’s Megan Lindridge and Sam Binelli had a big night on the floor. The two combined for 30 of Norwich’s digs for the match with the freshman libero Lindridge leading the way with 17. Binelli ended the night with 13 and another big contributor was Chloe Winton, saving six points with her dig attempts.
With two blocks and 14 kills, Lauren Squires of the Purple Tornado once again had a strong performance at the net. Squires, one of Norwich’s power hitters this season, also had three aces and two digs.
Dishing out the assists to set up the kill attempts were Maddy Morris and Francesca Salerno. Morris reached double digits with 10 while Salerno finished with seven.
To go along with her big defensive game, Binelli added two kills and had a good night serving with four aces. Her teammate Lexi Whaley led the team with six aces aiding Norwich in the win.
Oneonta was led Clarissa Shaw’s eight kills and 22 assists offensively while colleagues Liz Serfin (15) and Emily Lobb (14) combined for 29 digs to pace the defense for the Yellowjackets.
Norwich heads to Greenville Saturday morning to participate in another day tournament. Action is set to begin at 9 a.m. The Tornado’s next regular season match is scheduled for Tuesday at Windsor.

GREENE – Oxford traveled a few miles south on Route 12 to face Greene in the afternoon. The Blackhawks returned later in the evening with a 3-0 win over inter-county and Midstate Athletic Conference foe Greene to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Oxford secured the match win by taking the first two games 25-16 and picking up the three set sweep by holding off the fighting Lady Trojans 25-20.
Maddy Howe, Olivia Kelsey and Mallory Olsen-Nichols each had three kills during the match to lead the Blackhawks’ offensive attack. Howe added four aces while Olsen-Nichols delivered six assists in the match. Daysha Simpson also had a good night passing, coming away with four assists in the match.
Lilie Horton added another four aces in the match to help Oxford with the victory.
In the loss, Green was defensively led by Julianna Ayres 39 digs and her teammate Shelby Holt’s additional 16 digs. Holt added three kills in the match and had five straight service points during a run.
Both teams play again on September 30 as Oxford hosts Walton and the Trojans’ take on Afton/Harpursville at home. The two MAC matches are set to start at 5:30 p.m.
