Coggins records 20th goal of season

NORWICH – Needing to win both games this week to make Section IV playoffs, the Lady Tornado came out on their home pitch ready to secure one of two wins. Norwich needed less than five minutes of play to put one of the six goals the home team scored in the 6-2 win over the Windsor Black Knights Monday night.
Norwich’s Emily Davis fired a cross into the center of the box and waiting for the ball to come to her was teammate Katie Gawronski. Gawronski, a senior midfielder, gathered the bouncing ball and booted a shot over the outstretched arms of the Windsor keeper for the early strike.
Less than 3 minutes later, Norwich’s leading goal scorer Sydney Coggins took a 50/50 ball with one dribble and fired it into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Norwich controlled the possession for most of the remaining minutes with Windsor getting an occasional run into their offensive third of the field but either team was unable to find the back of the net again in the first half, carrying over the 2-0 score into the second.
Minutes into the later half, Windsor’s Samantha Sova was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box. On her attempt, Sova put the ball just past a diving Bree Minor – the Tornado’s backup keeper who made her first appearance in a varsity game this season – to cut the deficit down to one.
Answering very quickly was Coggins. Making a quick pass to herself, the Norwich junior carried the ball down the line and riffled a ball into the back of the net to quick get the lead back to two. With both over her goals in the game, Coggins reached 20 scored on the season. She also had three assists Monday night.
The Lady Tornado weren’t done yet.
Less than a minute after Coggins’ second goal, Gawronski delivered a ball to outside forward Sarah Davis. With the curling finish into the upper 90 of the goal, Norwich took a 4-1 advantage.
Davis scored again in the second, giving Norwich a 6-1 lead after Halea Eaton netted the fifth goal of the contest for the home team with a header.
With 1:38 left in the game, Riley Minor of Windsor added a goal after colleague Marissa Strawn gave her a pass, leading her inside the box and in range to put one between the posts.
Norwich took a total of 25 shots in the game. The opposition’s keeper, Tanis MacNamera, made 15 saves in the loss.
The Lady Tornado host Seton Catholic on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. At halftime, head coach Doug Coggins will honor this year’s seniors.
Norwich defeated the Lady Saints earlier this season and will need to win once again in order to make playoffs. The Lady Tornado have Chenango Forks remaining on the schedule following Thursday’s contest.
