Tornado swimmers set fast times in non-league win over Greene on senior night

NORWICH – The Norwich Girls swim team improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season after defeating Greene in a non-league meet at home on Tuesday night 90-61.
Halfway through the event, the Purple Tornado head coach Saundra Gantt recognized her five seniors who are set to graduate in June of 2020. Emerson Burton, Riley Revoir, Margie Winter, Jazmine Potter and Hailey Shattuck have been coached by Gantt for their years on the varsity program and were joined with their parents and family members during the special ceremony.
Prior to the senior recognition, the Lady Tornado and the Greene Trojans swam a total of four events with Norwich coming in first in all but the Lady Trojans placing second in half of the races.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Ashley Coombs, Kaitlyn Blaisure, Tanner Olds and Abigail Natoli placed first in the event that started off the meet with a time of 2:21.56. In the same event, Greene’s Victoria Milk, Emily Milk, Madison Pavlovich and Sophia Hanselman placed third.
Norwich took a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 individual medley relay with Abby Hansen securing first with her time of 2:30.49. Aurora Strauch and Olds came in behind her while Amy Bentley and Ella Prindle of Greene grabbed team points of the event, placing fourth and fifth for the visiting team.
In the very fast paced 50 yard freestyle, Angela Carlson came away with the win with her time of 26.37. Greene’s Skyler Nowalk finished second, just two second off Carlson’s pace in the event. Shattuck and Addyson Whaley were third and fourth for Norwich and Greene’s Victoria Milk and Hanselman rounded out the top six finishers, once again helping the Lady Trojans with team points.
Following the intermission for the seniors, the Lady Tornado swimmers saw two personal best times crushed and an exciting race for first in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Hansen swam in the 100 yard backstroke for just the second time of her high school swimming career. Her first time racing in the event, she posted a time of 1:10. Tuesday night, the Norwich swimmer finished first in the event with a time of 1:07.34 to beat her previous best by two and half seconds.
Burton, the Tornado’s distance swimmer, set a new personal record in the 500 yard freestyle Tuesday night with a time of 6:10.94. The senior’s best time prior to the meet was set earlier this season at 6:16. Starting off the block strong, many in attendance thought Burton would start to slow down. However, with the preseason training and continuous work during practice, Burton stayed on pace and shattered her perviously set time.
An exciting race between teammates occurred during the 100 yard freestyle as Carlson and Blaisure were neck and neck for the four pool-lengths. Touching the wall just three-tenths of a second faster was Blaisure for first with Carlson coming in right behind. Greene’s Nowalk placed third with Julia Llewelyn coming in fourth.
Llewelyn took first place in the 200 yard freestyle event in the first part of the meet and with her fourth place finish against some of the top swimmers in the area, the eighth-grader was just getting warmed up.
As the last race of the night took place, Greene’s 400 yard freestyle team of Olivia Ketzak, Prindle, Nowalk and Bentley started off the event with a nice pace, and were even with the Norwich foursome. Nowalk shaved seven seconds off the pace during her split and created a slight gap between the Trojans’ lane and the the Tornado team right next to them.
That was until Norwich’s Llewelyn dove into the pool and caught back up. As the race came down to the final 25 yards, Llewelyn and Bentley battled. Stroke for stroke, the two came into the final few kicks with the Tornado youngster reaching to touch the wall first at a time of 4:40.70. Greene finished with a time of 4:42.62.
Bentley, who swam the final two events back-to-back, won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:31.08.
Norwich’s Winter earned the win in the 100 yard butterfly, which was the event following the small break in the action filled meet.
Four of the five Tornado seniors were placed on a relay team that took first in the 200 yard freestyle race and Greene placed second in the event.
Norwich heads to the Elmira Invitational on Saturday with swimming set to begin at 9 a.m. Greene travels to Lansing on Tuesday for a meet at 4:30 p.m.
