HERBURNE – The Marauders raced out to a quick 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of play before ultimately securing the second win of the week with a 4-1 final over host Mount Markham Thursday night.
S-E’s Brogan Winton started the scoring when he collected a rebound after the initial save by the Mustangs’ Alex Arkema, tapping the ball into the wide open right side of the goal.
Winton then delivered a pass from the wing to a wide open Nathan Morgan who was waiting at the top corner of the 18. Morgan sent a curling shot that went past Arkema at the far post for the 2-0 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Winton gave the Marauders a 3-0 advantage with another rebound that he gathered and pushed a low ball into the net.
Sherburne-Earville picked up where they left off in the first half as the Winton-Morgan connection tallied the fourth and final goal for the visiting team.
Following a corner kick by Mount Markham, the Mustangs’ Jacob McKenzie recorded the team’s only goal of the match after scoring the loose ball during the scramble in the box. However, John Oley of S-E turned away all other shot attempts in the second half, giving the Marauders a three goal win.
The Marauders hosted the Golden Knights from Holland Patent earlier in the week and after a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, over time was needed to determine a winner in the Center State Conference League match on the pitch.
The Marauders scored twice in a short amount of time. Tn the first half, Gabe Irwin’s shot was turned away HP’s keeper Jonathan Tolpa. However, Nathan Morgan followed up on the shot attempt and converted the rebounded save for the game’s first goal.
Minutes later, S-E took their first corner kick of the game and took the 2-0 lead after Irwin sent a header into the net. Serving in the cross and recording the assist on the play was Dan Scholl, sending in a prefect ball to the near post where his teammate was waiting.
Nearing the end of the first half, the Golden Knights were awarded a penalty kick after a Sherburne-Earlville player touched the ball in the box. HP’s Carter Williams converted, cutting the Marauder lead in half.
Shortly into the second half, Holland Patent’s Jack Scroth scored the equalizer on a direct kick just outside the corner of the penalty box, beating the Marauders’ keeper Zach Trass, at the far post.
As both teams were unable to score the game winner, the game went into golden goal overtime. During the extra minutes, Irwin was taken down just outside the penalty box, leading to a Holland Patent yellow card and a Sherburne-Earlville direct kick.
The Marauders’ Noah Posson ended the game when his direct kick went over the Holland Patent defensive wall and beat Tolpa at the near post.
“[Tuesday’s game] was not one of the best games we have played as we struggled to find rhythm offensively and defensively,” said head coach Michael Rodriguez. “Our win was a gutty, grind it out kind of win. It was fantastic to see our seniors step it up and lead the way as they were responsible for all three goals.”
The Marauders (7-6-1, 6-4) host Waterville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will travel to face the same team a day later.
