NORWICH – City of Norwich officials held an open house and announced that their recently rebuilt home complete with in-floor heating, tile flooring, and new appliances is now on the market for potential bidders.

The over 2,000 square foot home, located at 45 Silver Street in Norwich, was rebuilt from the ground up using funds from a RESTORE New York grant, covering approximately $120,000 worth of construction.

The Restore New York Communities Initiative provides municipalities with financial assistance for revitalization of commercial and residential properties. The program encourages community development and neighborhood growth through the elimination and redevelopment of blighted structures.

According to New York State Governor Cuomo, communities across New York are making strategic investments to help grow their local economies, and through this latest round of Restore NY, their most vulnerable areas will receive the support needed to re-energize and develop once again.

"I encourage local governments to apply for funding, as it supports the demolition and rehabilitation of blighted properties to improve our neighborhoods, entice new investment, and support a stronger, more prosperous New York for all,” said Cuomo.

Officials from the City of Norwich said they intend on applying for another grant when available in hopes of completing another project.

According DCMO BOCES Representative Jason Lawrence, this has been nearly two years in the making, and is the culmination of The City of Norwich and BOCES working together to improve their community.

“There’s a lot of research out there that shows having an eyesore in your neighborhood can lower your property value,” said Lawrence. “This home that used to be here was an example of that.”

He said not only was this a great opportunity for the community to replace a dilapidated home with a brand new one, but it also served as a great training experience for the students involved with the project.

“The BOCES students got real world experience with this project, and learned what it's like to build a house from the bottom up,” said Lawrence.
