Norwich runners finish better than half field at Bill Coughlin invite

ROME – In the 3.1 mile race held by the Rome Free Academy, seven Norwich Tornado runners participated in the 2019 Bill Coughlin Cross Country event on Saturday at the Staley Upper Elementary school in Rome.
With only four runners for the boys and three registered for the girls team, both Norwich squad’s finished with an incomplete team score as there needs to be five team members to race.
The Tornado’s Steven Kaman was the first Norwich boy to cross the finish line, coming in ninth out of the 126 runner field. His 5:51 pace for each mile gave him a final time of 18:08.4.
Makaio Sutton was just five seconds off his teammate’s pace to place 11th, crossing the line at the 18:25.2 mark.
With a time of 18:55.6 (6:06 per mile), Norwich’s Julian Roque was the 20th runner to finish the course while teammate Zander Sutton came in at the middle of the pack with a time of 21:09.8.
The Norwich girls that competed in Saturday’s race finished 27th, 31st and 46th in the event.
Adrienne Veddar paced a 7:51 mile, finishing the course at 24:22.2 and the 27th runner out of the large field.
Teammate Hannah Debates was just five places back with her time of 25:19, a pace of 8:09 for each mile completed.
Maria Palmeres, Norwich’s final runner to cross, was the 46th runner to finish and ran a time of 28:35.7 for the 3.1 miles.
The Tornado participate at the Southern Tier Athlete Conference (STAC) East Championships Tuesday at Cole Park in Harpursville. The seniors for the Norwich Cross Country team will be recognized prior to the start of the race, which is scheduled for 4 p.m.
