Storm rolls past Edison to improve to 3-1 on season

ELMIRA  – With the convincing win on Saturday afternoon against host Thomas A. Edison, Unadilla Valley moves to 3-1 on the season and sits fourth in the current 8-Man league standings for Section IV Football.

The Storm controlled both sides of the ball as they were able to hold Edison to single touchdown defensively while the visiting team up 51 points on the scoreboard on the other side of the ball. Blaine Rifanburg and Kyler Butts each scored three touchdowns in the game and teammate John Leonard added one 63 yards from the line of scrimmage.

Rifanburg, UV’s quarterback from a season ago, moved to the running back position prior to the first game of the season due to a broken arm in the team’s scrimmage. Using his speed and shiftiness in the backfield, Rifanburg took the ball 18 times during Saturday’s game for 128 yards on the ground.

The Storm’s back also caught one of the current quarterback’s – Kyler Butts – passes for 14 yards.

Butts finished the game with three completed passes in his four attempts down field, totaling 83 yards for the day. His other target for the day was Dawson Cashman, taking those two completions for 69 yards to average 34.5 yards per catch.

As he scored three touchdowns of his own on his carries on the ground, Butts ran for 108 yards on 14 carries. Mitch Merlo, the up-the-middle back for the Storm, took nine handoffs for 75 yards.

Defensively, Butts and lineman Tim Postma came away with eight tackles in the game to lead the team. As the team has focused on wrapping up and bringing the runner down, Travis Knapp and Marcus Proskine helped limit the Edison team by taking down the ball carrier six times each.

Unadilla Valley was able to get into the backfield and disrupt their opponent’s offense, Nick Tuttle and Matthew Tuttle both sacked the Edison quarterback once in the game while Proskine and Patrick Mayhood teamed up for a sack of their own.

Also having a highlight play was Butts with the punt block on one of Edison’s attempts.

The Storm (3-1, 2-1) host Lansing Friday at 7 p.m. for the second game of the season. The Bobcats are currently leading the 8-Man league standings with an undefeated record of 4-0 as they have outscored their opposition by 100 points over the first four games. Unadilla Valley holds a point difference of 65 over their opponents.
