Suspected drunk driver charged with manslaughter after hitting bicyclist in Columbus

COLUMBUS – A New Berlin man was charged with manslaughter and other crimes after he allegedly drove drunk then struck and killed a bicyclist with a youth riding in the car.


According to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:24 a.m. on October 19, law enforcement received a 911 call reporting a one car motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on a bicycle on State Route 80 in the Town of Columbus.


Allen R. Emrich, 49, of New Berlin was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the car, driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police said Emrich was traveling West on State Route 80 when he struck bicyclist Martin Logsdon, age 30, who was riding a bicycle in the West bound lane. Logsdon was pronounced deceased at the scene.
