OXFORD – For the first time in several years, the Oxford Lady Blackhawks Soccer Club appeared in a Section IV Class C playoff game. Hosting the Raiders of Trumansburg – the No. 10 seed – the seventh-seed Oxford had trouble generating offense in the pouring rain, falling to the visiting team by a final of 3-1.
Trumansburg struck first with 16:47 left in the first half as Claire Valleu found a streaking Bailey Trudell. Trudell then settled, turned and fired one into the net for the early 1-0 lead but she wasn’t done yet.
Just three minutes later, Trudell scored the second goal of the contest to give her team a two-goal lead over the host Blackhawks.
The Lady Raiders took the advantage into the break while their opponent’s head coach Kathleen Cragle looked to make changes and had hope her team was going to generate offense in the second 40 minutes of play.
It worked as Oxford tailed a goal with 30:31 left to cut the deficit down to a goal. Ellie Ryan, a senior on the Blackhawks roster, ripped a shot attempt from outside the 18-yard box. As the ball sailed through the air, it appeared to be an easy save for the Trumansburg keeper Abby Jackson.
However, with the rain continuing to come down and the ball taking an odd bounce into her hands, Jackson misplayed the shot attempt. Kaylin Tefft of Oxford stayed with the play, following through to tap home the Blackhawks’ goal.
With the goal swinging the momentum in Oxford’s favor, the Blackhawks’ took a few more shots but none reached the back of the net for the rest of the game.
Trudell tacked on the third goal of the playoff hat trick after Tefft’s goal to extend the game back to two goals as the Blackhawks’ goalie Lexi Kohlhepp came out to make a stop. As she did, the Trumansburg scorer tapped it the opposite direction and the ball rolled into the side of the net to secure the win for the visiting team.
The Raiders took a total of 15 shots throughout the game while Oxford shot just four times – the majority in the second half of play. Kohlhepp finished her career as the Blackhawks’ keeper with 10 saves.
The loss ends Oxford’s best season in a few years at a record of 8-5-2 – a season in which the Lady Blackhawks went seven games in a row with out a loss, winning five and tying their opponent in two.

NEWARK VALLEY – Making their second trip the sectional tournament in three years, the Lady Purple Tornado earned the 10-seed of the Class B girls soccer bracket. Tuesday afternoon, the team from Norwich traveled to face the Newark Valley Cardinals – the No. 7 seed.
In the cold and wet contest, the Lady Tornado were able to put two goals into the net but the home Cardinals scored four times – all goals coming in the first half – to win the first-round sectional contest 4-2.
Norwich opened up the game controlling the possession as they had several scoring chances. Sarah Davis, Taylor McCarthy and Sydney Coggins each had shots and passes in front of the goal but the ball skipped by, barely missing the posts.
At the other end, the Cardinals were awarded a corner kick and turned the free kick that went over every player’s head into a goal just six minutes as the ball curled into the back of the net.
Just four minutes later, Coggins broke through with a pass from senior teammate Halea Eaton, scoring the first Norwich goal of the game and quickly tying the game at 1-1.
Once again using a corner kick to their advantage, Newark Valley added another goal. The ball skipped over a Purple Tornado defender and went into the net to give the Cardinals the one goal advantage again. on a corner kick that skipped over a defender and into the net.
The home team then quickly added another two goals, bring their lead to 4-1.
Facing a three-goal deficit, the Norwich team did not quit. Taylor McCarthy chased down a ball from 30 yards away, saving it from going out of bounds and sent a pass to Emily Davis.
Davis then turned and served a ball to Coggins who netted the second Tornado goal, cutting the lead down to two as the first half ended. “That goal does not happen if Taylor quit on the play,” said Norwich head coach Doug Coggins.
“Our great passing and working the ball from the outside in was the key to keeping the game close,” continued Coach Coggins. “We had great defensive play from Margaret Dougher, Abby Flynn, Emily Flynn and Jenea Evans. Our mid fielders – Mackenzie Hess, Halea Eaton and Ellie Ryan – had a tough job with the wet conditions and continuous slipping but they delivered for us as they kept feeding the speedy forward line.”
In the second half, the offense stalled for both teams as the tough field conditions and weather slowed everything and everyone down.
“I am very proud of all the girls who never stopped trying no matter what the score,” said Coach Coggins “Norwich is in a good spot for the future and will look to climb up in the rankings next year.”
The Purple Tornado end their 2019 campaign with a final record of 6-8-1.
