NORWICH - On October 12, the Lt Warren E. Eaton, DSC American Legion Post 189 proudly hosted the Sixth District American Legion Auxiliary's Fall Conference.
The purpose of the conference was for department officers to get new information to the members. 2019-2020 District President Sophie Liberatore welcomed guests from all ten counties, her officers, and especially the Department of NYS President Linda Tome and her officers; 73 attendees.
There were program reports, a membership skit, a prestigious award presented, raffles, and a hearty lunch to satisfy all.
NYS Dept. President Tome is spreading the news that the American Legion Auxiliary will turn 100 on November 10 and all Units should plan to celebrate this year.
Linda said that the values of the first ALA National President, Edith Hobart, of selfless service to America’s veterans, service members, military families, and local youth are the same today as they were 100 years ago.
"Stop Soldier Suicide" is the fundraising project of Dept. President Linda. There's one military personnel suicide every 58 minutes. These active service members, veterans, and military families need help. For some, yoga, talking, retreats, or individual time with a mental health facilitator will help.
It's different for each individual and they work one-on-one to assess what they need and make sure they get that help. Units will be raising awareness and funds for this project. (FMI- stopsoldiersuicide.org)
Janet Elston, last year's 6th District President, received the Best National Community Service Award in the Eastern Division presented by the Department President. This achievement was in part a response to a "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Celebration", held this past March 30. Janet, from Marathon, hosted the event featuring a Vietnam veteran's reception, a parade, and a photo gallery.
Approximately 290 people attended the event and donations totaled $144,845. In addition, the award represented all of the impressive community service programs throughout the entire Department of NY.
Some important event dates were mentioned such as the upcoming NYS Department visitation on October 25 at Sherburne Post 876, and the Christmas Party gift give away at the NYS Veterans' Home (for residents) on Dec. 7. In 2020: the Mid-Winter Conference is in Albany – Jan. 24-26; the 6th D. Spring Conference will be at Post 876 - Sherburne on April 18, and the Department Convention will be in Binghamton on July 15-18.
Before the afternoon was done, raffles were drawn. Several ALA members from Chenango County won baskets – Susie Boise of Sherburne Unit 876, and Resi Fuller, Melanie Haines, and Colleen Melella all of Norwich Unit 189.
