UV falls to Delhi in defensive matchup
GREENE – The Trojans have set themselves up for a Section IV Class C semifinals repeat matchup against Trumansburg after taking down the Saints of Seton Catholic with a 2-0 shut out win on Saturday.
The third-seeded Greene team held possession in their offensive third of the pitch for most of the game as the home squad held a 22-2 shot advantage over the visiting Saints.
On two of the 22 shots taken by the Trojans, Jonny Lee and Trent Rapp found the back of the net – each scoring a goal in the two halves of play.
With 28:08 on the clock, Lee opened up the scoring in the first with a quick flick pass from Scout McCumiskey after the cross ball served in by Terriek Brown set the play up.
While the Trojans kept the pressure going, they were unable to connect on another goal in the remaining minutes of the first half.
Over two-thirds of the way through the second half, Greene’s Alec Frair took a free kick after a Seton foul and sent the ball into the box towards the goal. His colleague Trent Rapp made a run to the ball and sealed the win with a header as 16:33 remained on the clock.
Stopping both shots to preserve the shut out win for the Trojans was senior keeper Nick Shoemaker. It was the 10th shut out for the goalie this season.
A season ago, Greene fell to Trumansburg in overtime with a controversial call on the end of the game. The Trojans – who are lower seed in the match up – will be looking to avenge the heartbreaking loss to the Blue Raiders last October on Wednesday. The game will be played in Trumansburg at 3:30 p.m. with the winner moving on to the championship game at Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta Saturday.

DELHI – Only one goal was scored in the third game of the season between Delhi and Unadilla Valley on Saturday. To the heartbreak of the Storm, the win was not in their favor as they fell 1-0 in the quarterfinals to the Bulldogs.
Just over the halfway point of the first half, Christian Imperi of Delhi fielded a cross from junior teammate Preston Post. As the ball sailed through the air from the left side of the field to the right, Imperi was able to get a foot on it after sliding across the ground in front of UV keeper Brandon Kneale. Before the two players made contact, Imperi’s touch sent the ball in a different direction and it rolled over the goal line for the 1-0 lead.
“We had a good game plan going in,” said Storm’s head coach Ryan Houck. “When [Delhi] scored, we had three mistakes happening at once that led to the goal. Otherwise we executed well.”
After the Bulldogs’ goal with about 20 minutes left in the first half, the home team and No. 4 seed held on for the remainder of the contest to knock Unadilla Valley out of the Section IV Class C tournament.
The Storm were able to get off four shots throughout the game but were limited in offensive production as UV’s top two players sat out significant minutes due to an injury sustained against Bainbridge-Guilford a week earlier.
Their best chance coming in the early minutes of the second half but the shot was turned away by Delhi’s goalie Logan Bryan.
It was a defensive game between the two team teams. Bryan and Kneale both came up with timely saves as the two goalkeeper finished with nearly the same amount of stops in the contest. Kneale totaled five as the Bulldogs took six shots.
The Storm ended the day with four shots and Bryan stopped all chances – including what Houck said were “three huge saves,” – by UV to complete the shut out win.
Unadilla Valley ends the season with an overall record of 9-5-1.
“I’m proud of this team,” said Houck after the game. “We accomplished some of our goals coming into the season. We won the [Sherburne-Earlville] Tournament, scored 53 goals (compared to 32 last year), raised a bunch of money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and competed in the [Midstate Athletic Conference] and sectionals.
“It’s sad to see the season end but all good things come to an end. And it’s a bittersweet ending as I have been lucky to coach at UV for 11 years as a varsity coach. I will miss it greatly as I move on to another job at Hamilton.”
