Norwich runners finish well at back-to-back STAC events
MAINE – In back-to-back Southern Tier Athletic Conference meets, the Norwich boys’ and girls’ cross country teams had a strong showing – both for team and individual performances.
In Saturday’s STAC Championship meet, the girls’ team placed 12th as all six of the runners placed within the top 100 of the big conference field.
Hannah DeBates was the first Lady Purple Tornado to cross the finish line running the 5k race in 24:08.4. DeBates placed 64th overall and teammate Adrienne Vedder was four runners behind. The two have raced to nearly the same pace all season.
Another two that have been running side by side throughout the year are Grace Bookamer and Robyn Diehl. They finished within seconds of each other in the conference championship 5k. Bookamer crossed the tape at 26:42.9 for 83rd place, while Diehl finished at 85th overall.
Maria Pomares and Lexi Slate ran to a pace just two-tenths of a second apart as Pomares placed 87th with a time of 27:41.9 and Slate came in at 27:42.1.
Tuesday’s STAC crossover event saw a much smaller field of runners and the Lady Purple Tornado squad took home a second place finish.
This time, Vedder crossed the line first as she ran a time of 23:34. DeBates was just two places behind, pacing herself to a time of 24:14.
Bookamer was the next Norwich runner to come in with Diehl and Pomares following in after. Bookamer’s time was 27:10 while Diehl finished at 27:27 and Pomares was eight seconds behind her.
At the conference championships, Norwich’s Stephen Kman, Makaio Sutton and Julian Roque received STAC honors for their performance at the race.
Out of 115 runners in the boys race, Kman came in 27th overall running a time of 17:40.5. Sutton and Roque placed 30th and 31st as the two teammates crossed the finished line five-tenths of a second apart.
Zander Sutton, Norwich’s fourth runner for the event and the lone ninth-grader on the team for the event, ran a time of 20:54.4.
At Tuesday’s crossover race, Makaio Sutton was the first Tornado to come in, running to a time of 17:26. His time placed him third overall for the event filled with 50 runners from six different teams.
Kman and Roque placed back-to-back, finishing 7th and 8th while Zander Sutton was the 26th runner to cross the finish line in the race. Kman and Roque were separated by four seconds while the younger Sutton raced to a time of 20:47.
Norwich will send all runners to the Section IV State Qualifier event next, which is scheduled for November 7 at Chenango Valley State Park at 11:30 a.m.
