Stabbing in Otselic tops indictments
CHENANGO COUNTY – Six individuals are facing grand jury indictments after allegedly committing crimes including an assault in the Town of Otselic, a burglary in the Town of Smyrna, and two rapes in the City of Norwich.
Howard C. Williams was indicted on two counts of second-degree assault, class D felonies, following an altercation in the Town of Otselic.
According to his indictment, at approximately 10 a.m. on September 11 in the Town of Otselic, while at the Cellular Tower Facility located on Flanagan Road, Williams stabbed a victim three times in the, “right side rib cage area, under the right arm.”
It states that the victim required hospitalization and they suffered from a collapsed lung and rib fracture.
At the time of the arrest Chenango Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting said the men were working together and cutting wire when a conflict broke out between them.
“There was a conflict and he overreacted to it,” said Cutting.
Cutting said Williams fled the scene of the stabbing, but a few hours later was later taken into custody at a motel in the Town of McGraw by members of the New York State Police and Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.
Jeremy M. Sawyer was indicted on second-degree burglary, a class C felony, and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony, after allegedly stealing firearms, gin, and change from a Town of Smyrna residence.
The indictment states that at 9:30 p.m. on August 19, Sawyer entered a residence on State Highway 80 in the Town of Smyrna and stole a, “Savage Arms Model 110, 270 caliber rifle bearing [a serial number], a Remington Model 788 22-250 caliber rifle [bearing a serial number], a bottle of Tanqueray Gin and an unknown amount of United States currency change from within.”
Travis A. Bell was indicted on third-degree burglary, a class D felony, third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony, and petit larceny, a class A felony, after he allegedly stealing six mini-bikes from a property in the Town of Pharsalia.
Allegedly, on December 15, 2018, Bell stole from a barn on George Peasley Road. His indictment states that he stole a 1994 Honda CT70 mini-bike, a 1982 Honda CT70 mini-bike, a 1969 CT70 mini-bike, a 1982 Honda CT70 mini-bike, a Honda 250 mini-bike, and mini-bike parts.
Ryan J. Ober was indicted on third-degree rape, a class E felony, and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
According to Ober’s indictment, during the month of September, while in the City of Norwich’s Kurt Beyer Park, Ober had sexual intercourse with an underage victim.
Timothy J. Smith was indicted two counts of third-degree rape, class E felonies, endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor, and third-degree criminal sexual act, a class E felony.
Smith’s indictment states that during the months of August and September, while in a residence on Silver Street, Smith had sexual intercourse with an underage victim.
Christopher H. Macy was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a class E felony, operating a vehicle with .08 percent or more by weight of alcohol in his blood, a class E felony, driving while intoxicated, a class E felony, and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
At approximately 10:22 p.m., on July 20, while in the City of Norwich, Macy allegedly drove a 2008 Ford Escape with a blood alcohol content of .21 percent. The indictment states that at the time of his arrest, Macy, “swayed as he walked,” and “his speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and watery and his breath smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage.”
It adds that Macy intentionally attempted to prevent his arrest by pulling his arms away and trying to enter his motor vehicle instead of complying with police orders.
