Two airlifted following DWI-related rollover

PRESTON – Two people in critical condition were airlifted out of Preston on Sunday following what police said was a single vehicle drunk driving related rollover.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on November 3, state police and local fire departments responded to a one-vehicle rollover at 1462 County Route 10 in the Town of Preston.

Police said the driver, Hayden J. Proppe, Jr. of Oxford, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Police said he was not injured in the crash.

New York State Police Director of Public Information Beau Duffy said the preliminary investigation determined that a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling at an excessive speed when the driver lost control and the truck rolled over and struck a tree.

Of the four passengers, two were airlifted by helicopter to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse: Sierra Powers, age 17, of Norwich; Angelina Thomas, age 16, of Norwich.

Passenger Jacob Hill, age 18, of Norwich, was transported by ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital.

Passenger Tristan Hornsby, age 18, of Oxford was transported to a hospital in Binghamton

Preston Department Fire Chief Kris Bartle said Sunday morning emergency responders received a 911 call describing a single vehicle motor vehicle rollover with two people in critical condition.

“We arrived on scene and started triaging patients,” said Bartle. “I’ve been around for a long time; I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff, but when you pull up and see there are five folks involved in a single vehicle accident, you know something’s different.”

He said the vehicle involved in the accident was a four door pick-up truck that was, “messed up.”

“To be honest with you, I’m surprised that we didn’t have any fatalities,” said Bartle.

Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino said one individual was airlifted directly from the scene, but both of the airlifted patients were sent to Upstate Medical in Syracuse.

Officials said the Preston Fire Department was on scene and Norwich, Pharasalia, and Oxford Fire Departments provided mutual aid with AMR assisting with ambulance services.
