Norwich’s VFW discusses recently built memorial

NORWICH – After approximately a year of construction, the dedication of the Norwich VFW’s memorial was held on Monday, and VFW representatives said pavers are currently open for those who wish to dedicate a place veteran sacrifice.
The dedication ceremony was held on Monday afternoon at the Norwich Veterans of Foreign Wars building. VFW Commander of Post 2782 Joe Santiago spoke at that event and discussed the creation of the memorial.
According to Santiago, the project concept was created two and a half years ago as he and the VFW board were discussing how they could do something to better remember the combat veterans of Chenango County.
“Construction started last year, and is almost completely done with only some lighting and a few odds and ends left to complete,” said Santiago.
At the dedication ceremony on Monday, Santiago referred back to his mission to set apart a particular place in order to honor Chenango County’s veterans.
“We are assembled here to pay tribute to the men & women of our community who have served in the United States armed forces; our neighbors who have fought in defense of this country, and for the preservation of our way of life,” he said. “There is a closeness we can feel at this sacred place.”
“Whether you’re related to someone whose name is placed here in stone or not: you can share in the kinship of being an American citizen. We are surrounded by the spirits of those who have served our country. Those who have sacrificed so much for the freedom we enjoy here on this day.”
Santiago said the memorial was built using several local organizations including, Rifanburg’s Lawn and Landscapes from Edmeston, Principle Design and Engineering from Norwich, and Savurn Memorials from Norwich.
He said Principle Design created the design of the memorial, and Savurn Memorials engraved the pavers and bluestone.
