Earlville man facing felonies after attempting to escape police twice

NORWICH – An Earlville man has been charged with multiple felonies after he fled from police attempting to pull him over for a traffic stop. Police then said he again tried to flee while inside the police station.
Michael P. Piliero, 21, of Earlville was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree escape, third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest following two incidents in the City of Norwich.
According to City of Norwich Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach, on the morning of October 27, a Norwich police officer attempted to stop Piliero on North Broad Street.
Roach said Piliero then sped away, leading to a high speed chase that was eventually called off for the safety of the public.
“He was picked up on a warrant for unlawful fleeing following a vehicle pursuit in the City of Norwich,” said Roach. “Along with quite a few traffic violations as well.”
Roach said after his arrest for fleeing an officer, Piliero then fought with law enforcement while in the Norwich Police Department.
“He did assault a police officer inside the cell block and attempted to escape,” Roach said. “The officer sustained injuries but is continuing to work.”
“Unfortunately we are seeing a spike in vehicle pursuits this year, and this is a change that the Norwich Police Department as well as other police departments in Chenango County have had to adjust to.”
Piliero was arraigned in the Norwich City Court and was held on $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date.
