Final votes counted: Shawn Sastri to be Norwich mayor, Tim Brown to be North Norwich supervisor
NORWICH – The Chenango County Board of Election finished the absentee and military ballot counts Wednesday in two closely contested races, naming Shawn Sastri as the next City of Norwich mayor, and Timothy C. Brown as Town of North Norwich supervisor.
Democratic Party Commissioner Carol Franklin said the final results were not finished until the office had allowed a seven day window for absentee ballots to come in and another 14 day window for absentee military ballots to arrive.
Franklin said the other races that had been contested would very likely not change due to the wide margins between candidates.
“Everything will be same except library trustees in Greene and New Berlin town justice,” said Franklin explaining the those votes still needed to be counted and verified.
She said this year welcomed in a number of changes to the voting process, including nine days of early voting.
According to the the final results from the city mayor race: Sastri received 478 votes for City of Norwich mayor; Jill Osterhout-Kraft 423; Joe Maiurano 380 and incumbent Mayor Christine Carnrike received 248.
In North Norwich Timothy C. Brown had 199 votes and Robert E. Wansor 184.
After learning of his victory Sastri said, “I’d like to thank voters for the support and casting that ballot. I’m honored to take over as mayor in January. I’m looking forward to the challenge, I think it will be an easy transition.”
Brown issued this statement:
“I would like to thank North Norwich voters for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to serve as your supervisor.
“As I enter my new position, I plan to learn more about all the terrific ideas each of you have that can be accomplished in North Norwich. During my campaign I was afforded the opportunity to have many meaningful conversations with each of you. Let’s continue to keep those lines open. I am asking each of you to come to board meetings with your ideas and concerns and get involved.”
“I would like to thank my family for the hours spent helping me in succeeding to be your supervisor, also to the Evening Sun for their reporting, the Board of Elections for their tireless work with our new voting system, the Republican Committee for their support, and Taylor’s Country House for our 'Meet and Greet.'”
“Thank you again to everyone, I am truly grateful to each of you for your support.”
The Evening Sun will publish all election results once they are finalized in the coming week.
