NORWICH – The 38th annual Norwich Family YMCA Turkey Trot was held in Norwich over the weekend, with several leading the pack and bringing home free turkeys for their families.
This year’s top winners were Josh Nogaret placing first overall with a time of 17:32:31 and Dorothy Collison placing first for women with a time of 21:20:56.
Kathleen Cheesborough finished first in her age group and donated her winner’s turkey to a local food bank.
YMCA Executive Director Jamey Mullen, said her donation is a true sign of the season of giving and the season of thanks as well.
According to Mullen, besides using the event as a fundraiser for the YMCA; the Turkey Trot is also an opportunity to highlight the community and open the door for many out of town folks participating in the event.
“Additionally, the event kicks off the holiday season with many family members returning home for Thanksgiving and participating,” said Mullen. “It has turned into a nice family event with children running, father and daughters running together, parents with children in strollers, and even families walking their four legged friends too.”
Mullen said the Turkey Trot provides an opportunity to community folks to volunteer and support a local event, and this year at least 50 volunteers helped with the event.
Mullen added that the event will likely remain the same for next year, but the Y would like to encourage more participation from families, beginners and of course the costume categories too.
According to Mullen, sandwiches for the event were provided by Arby’s, and turkeys were donated by WalMart and Sherburne Big M.
“Thank you to everyone who braved the weather, travel from afar, volunteered, sponsored, got dressed up, carried a flag, walked your dog, pushed your child, cheered for family, and hugged someone who pushed themselves to the limit,” said Mullen.
Mullen said of the many people who helped make the event possible, Norwich Family YMCA Event Director Shannon Gawronski and the fitness department including Jessica Jackson, Denise Bullock, Carrie Furman, Wendy Jones, Dan Conant, and Nicole Issacs were incredibly influential in this year’s success.
He added that other people who helped with the event included, Tom Revior who constantly assisted with setup and tear down, Jim Wallen who continues to assist with registration, Mary Fox and Dan Torres who assist with various tasks throughout the facility during the event.
“The Norwich Police Department and Fire Police are significant MVP’s in making this event happen each year,” said Mullen. “There almost to many as every volunteer effort is significant.”
“There is no meaningless task at all.”
