NORWICH – Senator Fred Akshar met with local leaders Thursday. He said communities working together with local organizations could solve the issues Chenango County currently faces.

The meeting was held in Norwich at the Peacock Manor, and attended by representatives of Improve Norwich Now, Chenango County Behavioral Health Services, Catholic Charities, and the City of Norwich. Some Norwich business owners were also in attendance.

When asked about the goal of the meeting, Improve Norwich Now Co-Founder Jen Westervelt said it was about having open dialogue with government representatives and working cohesively to find solutions for issues in Chenango County including affordable housing, non-profit funding, financial literacy, and ongoing education.

Akshar said the coalition of nonprofits has the potential to create positive changes in the area.

“Improve Norwich Now [is] comprised of several local and county agencies that are dedicated to realizing a brighter future for the City of Norwich and surrounding areas,” said Akshar. “I consider them a partner and look forward to working with them in the near future.”

“Government should never be the sole source of a solution when you’re trying to fix an issue; a part of that solution needs to come from your community.”
