NORWICH – Experience the wonder of the season during the annual Holiday Open House from noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 8 at the Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) campus, located at 45 Rexford St. in Norwich.

“We’re excited to celebrate the traditions of the season during our annual festivities, which we know the community looks forward to each year,” said Historical Society Executive Director Jessica Moquin. “Thanks to community partnerships, we are enhancing this year’s program to feature special guests and activities.”

In keeping with “Holiday Open House” tradition, visitors have the opportunity to purchase delicious treats along the “Cookie Walk,” browse the many titles in the Paperback Exchange, and shop the Bull Thistle Gift Shop’s holiday bazaar.

Back by popular demand, the Paperback Exchange will host a visit from Mrs. Claus, along with free book and toy prize giveaways. In addition, the Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich, otherwise known as “The Place,” will offer kid-friendly seasonal activities for the young-at-heart. Snowflake Artist Jim Baldwin will also demonstrate his unique gift of creating whimsical paper designs.
New to the Holiday Open House, Jeff Finegan – author of the “I Knew George Washington” series – will deliver interactive presentations throughout the day. The series is a unique collection of stories told from the perspective of historic figures – from distinctly varied walks of life – who were closely associated with the most influential of our nation’s “Founding Fathers.”

Washington was many things to many people: master to enslaved Billy Lee, Virginian colonel and Continental general to Doctor James Craik, and adopted father to the Marquis de Lafayette. The series’ narrators are not only witnesses to his failures and successes, but also to incredible events in world history. As historic fiction, the stories are well-researched, and have been subjected to rigorous “historic editing” by Mary V. Thompson, research historian at the National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon. Finegan’s appearance at the CCHS Holiday Open House is being generously underwritten by the James Madison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Perennial favorite the “Parade of Trees” features a unique twist this year, with community organizations presenting decorative interpretations of Chenango County culture, history, and heritage. The Holiday Open House is the first day of the “People’s Choice” contest, when visitors to CCHS can vote for their favorite tree by making coin and cash donations. Whichever tree container accumulates the greatest total by the conclusion of the contest (Dec. 27) will be deemed the winner. The winning tree’s earnings will be split evenly between the community organization and CCHS.

Admission to the museum is a free-will donation left up to each visitor's discretion, and approximately 75 percent of CCHS’ public programming is offered free of charge. During the Holiday Open House, guests can support the organization with the purchase of a chocolate-filled CCHS mug for $5. One of these mugs has an additional treat hidden among the sweets – a LaFonn pendant necklace, generously donated by McNeil.
