CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office passed a state mandated assessment which has allowed the organization to remain accredited since 1999.

Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr., addressed the continuing accreditation and said it followed an assessment and direct review of 109 standards established by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Cutting said in order to remain in good standing, agencies must maintain compliance with all program standards throughout the period of accreditation.

“To me it’s important that the public knows we hold our department to and operate at the highest level of professionalism,” said Cutting. “The 100 plus standards are procedures and regulations set by the state that force us to operate with efficiency.”

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Program is a progressive and contemporary way of helping police agencies evaluate and improve their overall performance.

It provides formal recognition that an organization meets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. Accreditation acknowledges the implementation of policies that are conceptually sound and operationally effective.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Division was originally accredited in 1999, and has successfully completed re-accreditation audits every five years, with the latest audit having been conducted on September 24 through 26.

Cutting said the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement as a whole act as role models for their community, and it’s important to hold officers accountable with high standards.

“We’re community partners, we try to put our best foot forward, and if we make mistakes then we know it’s important to address and fix them,” he said. “We were the only sheriff’s office that came up for re-accreditation in the state, and we look forward to continuing to hold ourselves to those standards in the future.”

He added that six other law enforcement agencies were re-accredited.

Sgt. Ronald Swislosky was awarded the John Kimball O’Neil Certificate of Achievement Award in recognition of his leadership and dedication as the program manager for our Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Accreditation Program
