NORWICH – In their first game of the season, the Norwich Purple Tornado boys basketball team posted 80 points, topping divisional opponent Chenango Valley 80-71.
Norwich jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and extended the lead to 20-5 before the visiting Warriors responded with their lights out shooting.
During the first quarter run for the Tornado, senior Tommy Flanagan the sharp shooter, knocking down three 3-point field goals – all with a CV defender in his face. Flanagan finished with 17 for the game, 15 points coming from beyond the arc.
Chenango Valley answered, bringing the game within five points midway through the second quarter but the home team countered with a run of their own to go into the locker room at the break up by 10 points.
Out of the break, the Warriors shifted the momentum in their favor as Tom Christoffersen and Dom Testani went on a scoring stretch.
In an attempt to throw something different at CV and stop their run, Norwich head coach Tom Collier turned to many first-year varsity players like Logan Ford, Torin Lawrence and Andrew Mullen. With his hustling efforts, Lawrence kept several offensive plays alive while both he and Ford played strong defense.
Mullen, who may have only played for a minute and half in the game, knocked down a big 3-point bucket, putting a quick halt on the Chenango Valley run and switch the game back into Norwich’s favor.
After the big three by their colleague Mullen, the Tornado’s JT Vinal and Carson Maynard – who played most of the contest – turned up the efforts on both end of the floor as their solid defense on CV’s top scorers, forcing turnovers or bad shots that turned into offense for the Purple Tornado senior duo.
Vinal (seven) and Maynard (six) combined for 13 points in the quarter, pushing the Tornado lead to 13 points going into the final eight minutes of play.
The Warriors, however, weren’t going away easy. With 3-pointers by Christoffersen and Riley Spencer as well as inside buckets Max Singer and Testani, Chenango Valley found themselves within nine points of the home team.
As there was just 3:14 seconds left at this point, and the Warriors in the double bonus due to Norwich’s aggressive style of defensive play, CV made the game interesting as they shot 6-for-7 at the foul line.
A late game run by the Tornado, however, put the game away to give Norwich the win in their season opener.
Tying Flanagan for a game-high score of 17 points was Vinal. The senior also recorded a double-double, pulling down 16 rebounds.
Maynard ended the night with 14 points and forward Jahlil Jones added 10 points, giving Norwich four scorers in double figures on the night.
Chenango Valley had five players score 10 or more points as they were led by Christoffersen’s team-best 16. Testani finished with 13 while Spencer tallied 11. Henry Stroka and Jake Worden each chipped in 10 in the loss.
Norwich will participant in the Stop DWI tournament at Johnson City this weekend. The Purple Tornado will face the New York State regional finalist and tournament host Wildcats on Friday at 8:45 p.m.
