Lady Tornado open season with 70-point win over divisional foe Lady Warriors

Oxford falls in close one to Franklin

BINGHAMTON – The Lady Purple Tornado went on a 35-4 run in the first quarter on the way to a 86-16 victory in the season opener on the road against Chenango Valley on Thursday.
Senior Halea Eaton of the Tornado posted a game-high 19 points, 11 coming in the opening stanza. Eaton was a sharp shooter for the visiting team, knocking down four 3-pointers throughout the game in the 70 point rout.
The Purple Tornado starters contributed all but nine points in the first eight minutes of play. Emerson Burton and Margaret Dougher were the first two players off the bench for Norwich and the two quickly contributed the nine points with Dougher scoring five and her senior colleague added four.
With 35 total shots made for the visiting team, all 12 Norwich players who played in the contest scored at least two points. Emily Evans also reached double figures with 10. Abby Flynn and Dougher each kicked in nine for the Lady Tornado while MacKenzie Hess added eight in the win.
Norwich scored 20 points in the second and 22 in the third before closing out the game with nine in the fourth.
Chenango Valley was led by Maddi Trisket’s six points and Emily Godstal’s four.
The Tornado started out the game with their tough, hard-nosed pressure defense but called the press back midway through the first quarter.
Norwich hosts Susquehanna Valley on Monday for the first home game their season. Game time is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

Franklin 42, Oxford 41
OXFORD – In a back-and-forth battle between Franklin and the host Lady Blackhawks, the visiting Purple Devils topped Oxford 42-41 Wednesday.
Franklin took a one point lead after the first quarter but the home team tied the score at the halftime break by outscoring the Devils 9-8 in the second stanza.
After the intermission, Franklin took the lead back by going on a 12-7 run for the third. Nearly flipping the score in the final eight minutes of play, Oxford tallied 12 but it was the Purple Devils eight points in the frame that gave them the one point win.
The Blackhawks out rebounded Franklin 33-25 but turned the ball over 14 more times than the Devils. Franklin capitalized off the Oxford miscues, scoring 14 points in the win.
Oxford’s Karley Miller paced the home team with 11 points and seven rebounds while Franklin’s Kayla Campbell posted a game-high 21 points. Campbell tied Miller with seven boards.
The Blackhawks’ Caitlyn Quigley pulled down a game-best eight rebounds in the loss and she added five points in the scoring column. Jada Albin and Madalyn Barrows also scored five points in the game while colleagues Ellie Ryan finished with seven and Olivia Kelsey tallied six.
Oxford’s next contest is Friday in Afton. A part of a boys and girls basketball quadheader, the girls are scheduled to play after the boys with a game time start of 6:30 p.m.
