Greene votes in favor of 15 million dollar capital project
GREENE – Yesterday the residents of Greene school district voted on the Greene Central School District’s proposed 2019 Capital Project.
The referendum was passed with a 76 percent approval, the vote tally was 116 in favor and 37 against, according to the school.
Superintendent Tim Calice. said the project has a budget set for $15 million dollars, however it will have no additional tax impact on residents of the district. $1.5 million of the budget will come from the capital reserve, while the other $13.5 million will come from New York State building aid.
The project plan includes school facility improvements as well as building and grounds maintenance. Starting in the summer of 2020, improvements will start with pavement reconstruction, concrete walk replacement, and some interior work according to Calice. Then, in the Spring of 2021, the schools will begin receiving more major upgrades.
“This project is focusing around a lot of the infrastructure, so it’s setting the foundation for future capital projects. We will be embarking on a five year strategic plan which will impact student life,” said Calice.
One of the major improvements included in the project is a whole new dining experience for high school students. A full kitchen renovation and a complete rework of the cafeteria design and layout are part of the capital projects plan.
“We’re also looking to improve the entire cafeteria program to be able to offer healthier and fresher options for students,” said Calice.
The school is also planning major security improvements. Calice states that the primary school’s “parent pick-up” area is currently too small, causing the doors to have to remain open. This is a security risk and also causes parents and students to have to deal with the elements during inclement weather. The area will be expanded to allow for more people, as well as the installation of intruder lock systems.
“It will add comfort to the community while keeping the district secure,” said Calice.
