Tornado place third in Stop DWI tournament

JOHNSON CITY – The Norwich boys basketball team won the second of their two games over the weekend, beating South Kortright 62-56 in Saturday’s Stop DWI Consolation at Johnson City High School.

The Purple Tornado landed in the third place game after falling to eventual champion Johnson City Friday night 85-51.

In Saturday’s game against the South Kortright Rams, Norwich’s long range game was on. As a team, the Tornado shot lights out, knocking down a total of 10 3-point field goals in the win. Tommy Flanagan led the way beyond the arc, hitting five from the outside.

Leading Norwich in the scoring column was Carson Maynard with 19 points – six coming from long distance. Maynard also had a big day at the free throw line, shooting 7-for-9 (78-percent) in the win.

The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter at 14-14 but Norwich went into the break leading by a point.

Out of the intermission, South Kortright took the lead after outscoring the Tornado 18-11 in the third behind the eight scored by Logan Kaufman.
