$155k missing from Columbus business, finance director arrested

COLUMBUS – A New Berlin woman is facing charges from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office after she allegedly used her position as director of finance to embezzle more than $155,000 from a Columbus business.

Amy L. Grant, 43, of New Berlin was charged with second-degree grand larceny, a class C felony, first-degree scheme to defraud, a class C felony and first-degree falsifying business records, a class E felony.

Police began investigating Grant after the company reported discovering suspicious activity.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Grant was charged following an investigation into embezzlement, where she allegedly stole from Golden Artist Colors Inc. in the Town of Columbus.

“It is alleged that for a time period of more than five years Grant had been stealing money while employed by the business,” said Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting. “The investigation discovered that Grant had stolen over $155,000 during the time period of employment.”

Sheriff’s Detective Chad O’Hara said the case has been under investigation for just under a month. O’Hara said Grant was in a director of finance position prior to her arrest.

According to the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office, Grant could face a maximum indeterminate sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison if convicted on the top charge. They reported she had been a “long-time employee” of the company.

Grant was arraigned in Columbus Town Court and is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date.
