Lady Blackhawks come away with big win over Rams
UV and S-E earn victories against conference foes
MORRIS – Oxford out scored South Kortright 14-9 in the second quarter to take a two point lead into the break. From there, the Blackhawks held on to top the Lady Rams 49-40 in the first round of the Joan Martin Tournament, hosted by Morris, Thursday evening.
“This win was a great team win by the girls,” said Oxford’s head coach Chris Palmer. “We have been battling all kinds of issues, between illness and injuries to foul trouble, but the girls really came together and played well. That is something you have to do in order to beat a team of South Kortright’s caliber. They may be a Class D school but they have history and are a tough opponent year-in and year-out.”
The Blackhawks trailed by three points following the first quarter as both teams started the game off with a slow start. During Oxford’s second stanza run that gave them the lead and the eventual win, Olivia Kelsey and Madalyn Barrows stepped up, scoring most of their points.
Both Kelsey and Barrows finished the game with 12 points each and Barrows ended the night with a double-double as she pulled down 10 rebounds.
All 12 of Kelsey’s points were bench points, where Oxford held a giant advantage in as South Kortright’s substitutes scored nine.
Ellie Ryan and Emma Hodge tallied seven apiece and colleagues Karley Miller and Jada Albin scored five.
The Rams Azalyn Hillis-Brunson ended the night with a game-high 17 points and 15 boards while teammate Sonia Reeves added six points and eight rebounds.
Oxford will play in the championship game of the tournament on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. The Blackhawks will play the winner of Morris and Chenango Valley, which takes place Friday night.

BAINRBIDGE – The Lady Storm of UV picked up their second win against defending Midstate Athletic Conference champion Bainbridge-Guilford Thursday night behind Meegan White’s team-best 15 points.
White tallied 10 of her 15 in the closing two quarters to pace Unadilla Valley in their 22-16 second half run. Also aiding in the late game run was Claire Converse, scoring seven of her eight points in the fourth.
The Storm opened up the game with a 15-7 rally over the Bobcats but B-G went on a run of their own, holding UV to five while they scored 14 in the second stanza.
Macie Leizear led the home team during the eight minute run, contributing nine of the the 14 points, and the Bobcats went into the locker room ahead by one after a Celeste Baldwin 3-pointer went in the hoop with 1:26 remaining in the half.
Leizear finished with a game-high 20 points for B-G. Taylor Parsons added six points and led the team in the rebounding column with 11.
Bainbridge-Guilford (4-3, 1-1) will play Tioga in the first round of the Kazalski Tournament at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 26. Sidney and Deposit/Hancock will play in the other first-round game at 4 p.m.
The Storm will host their annual Holiday tournament on December 27 and 28. UV will face Sherburne-Earlville at 3 p.m. while Hamilton and Gilbertsville-Mount Upton take the court at 1:30 on the 27th.

SHERBURNE – The Lady Marauders picked up the first win of the 2019-2020 on Thursday, beating league foe Canastota 66-27.
S-E jumped out to a 22-7 before cruising to the win. Sherburne-Earlville scored double figures in all four quarters of play and had balanced scoring throughout the lineup.
In the fourth, Canastota registered just two points after scoring 11 in the third, the highest offensive producing stanza for the visiting team.
The Marauders were led by the double-double performances by Tessa Cole and Elizabeth Peila. Cole finished with a game-high 25 points while coming away with 12 steals in the win. Cole has scored 20-plus in each of S-E’s four games this season.
Peila ended the night with 19, a career-high for the first-year Marauder, and 16 rebounds.
Alex Kober and Maria Albertina each chipped in seven points and teammate Jaci Wright scored six. Destinee Posey added a basket in the second quarter to round out the scoring for Sherburne-Earlville.
