Local charities may suffer without additional support for United Way

CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango United Way is only at 70 percent of its campaign goal, and without a financial push from its community local nonprofits may lack funding next year.

According to Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, the campaign has brought in approximately 70 percent of its goal so far, meaning nearly $86,000 is still needed to ensure the full funding for local nonprofits. The campaign’s deadline is the end of this month.

“Right now we’re officially at 70 percent, but we believe additional donations will come in soon putting us at around 80 percent,” said Monaco. “We know that there are contributors that have not yet given, but usually do – we’re hoping that they will in the near future.”

Monaco said to fund next year’s program, there are $380,000 in requests that would need to be filled. She added that holiday placement hasn’t been a positive influence for this year’s fundraising efforts.

“The way that the holidays fell this year have not been to our advantage,” she said. “There’s only two weeks left now, and then that’s that.”

“If you’ve never given, now is a good time.”

She added that 99.5 percent of the funds raised for Chenango United Way stay in Chenango County, with .5 of a percent going to the national United Way organization for dues.

Chenango United Way funds and organizes a variety of different groups and events that occur throughout the county including 25 programs and 14 food kitchen pantries.

In 2019 more than $90,000 has been dedicated towards funding education based programs, more than $100,000 has been dedicated towards health based programs, and more than $97,000 has been dedicated towards income based programs.

Events like the Greater Chenango Cares IRT event that occurred in 2018 were made possible thanks to the efforts of Chenango United Way in collaboration with government entities.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and the IRT event is one of the most fulfilling projects that we do,” said Monaco. “It’s so gratifying to serve people’s basic needs and to see so many volunteers come together to make a difference in our area.”
