Norwich rallies from large deficit to top tough Section II Schalmont

UV takes down Bobcats and Oxford falls to Morris
COBLESKILL – As one of just two teams from Section IV that competed in the Cobleskill Classic over there weekend, the Norwich boys basketball team took on Section II powerhouse Schalmont of Schenectady. Despite trailing by 15 points at one point in the first quarter, the Purple Tornado rallied in the next three quarters to win 90-75.
Tommy Flanagan and Carson Maynard each dropped a team-high 23 points in the Sunday matinee victory as two of the four Norwich scorers that reached double figures. Joining them were JT Vinal with 15 and Jahlil Jones, who chipped in 10 points.
The Schalmont Sabers were led by Shane O’Dell’s 41 points. O’Dell, a 6 foot-6 inch senior for the Sabers did all of his damage from the paint, making 18 field goals and going to the line eight times.
Teammate Jake Sanford added 15 and Trent Randle kicked in 12 in the loss.
Schalmont built a 22-10 lead by the end of the first but Norwich quickly responded with balanced scoring in the second stanza
The Tornado chipped away at the early double digit deficit with eight different players scoring at least one bucket in the quarter. Vinal went 3-for-4 at the foul line and scored four points to help Norwich pull within four at halftime.
After the break, Flanagan caught fire from beyond the 3-point arc, sinking four of his five made 3’s to help Norwich nearly erase the large lead for the Sabers and stay within striking distance.
The start of the fourth saw both teams go back-and-forth, scoring basket for basket, to allow Schalmont to hold the lead.
That was until Torin Lawrence hit the go-ahead 3-pointer in the fourth, putting Norwich out front 71-70. Following the big long-range basket by the Tornado youngster, the team from Section IV went on a run to take a 12 point advantage.
During the late game run to secure the win, Maynard knocked down a huge shot from behind the 3-point line as well as going a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line. Flanagan also hit all free throws taken in the stanza (4-for-4), giving Norwich 10 free points between to two players down the stretch.
Norwich (5-1) have won four straight as they head into the holiday break. The Tornado will take on Vestal in the first round of the Unadilla Valley Holiday tournament on December 27 at 4:30 p.m.

Morris 66, Oxford 39
MORRIS – The host Mustangs took a 32-17 lead by the halftime break and held onto the lead as they cruised past the Oxford Blackhawks 66-39 in the consolation game of the Ray Clement Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Morris’ Jacob Goodspeed, Scott Strain and Hamid Williams reach double figures in the win but received balanced scoring throughout the lineup. Goodspeed led all scorers with 20 points while Strain scored 13 and Williams chipped in 10.
The Mustangs made seven 3-pointers in the game but four game in the third when Morris went on a 20-12 run.
Oxford’s Pleasie Hughey III led the Blackhawks with 12 points, tallying eight in the third quarter where the visiting team produced 12 points – their highest in single stanza in the contest.
Two day earlier, Oxford fell to Frankfort-Schuyler in the opening round of the tournament 59-48.
The Blackhawks kept the game close, going into the locker room trailing by six points at the break but Frankfort-Schuyler’s 30 points over the next two quarters pushed them to the 11-point win.
Alex Smith led Oxford in Thursday’s game, scoring 18 with eight coming in the closing quarter of play. Matt Roach added 13 in the loss. Nine of his points came from long-range as hit three 3-point field goals.
As a team, the Blackhawks made six from beyond the 3-point arc.
Oxford will play again on December 27 and 28 as one of the four teams in the Edmeston Tournament. The schedule was still to be determined.
Unadilla Valley 58, Bainbridge-Guilford 46
BAINBRIDGE – The Storm opened the Midstate Athletic Conference contest against the Bobcats with an 18-9 run to hold on for the 58-46 road win at Bainbridge-Guilford Friday night.
UV’s Caleb Parker scored a game-high 28 points in the win while Tim Postma added 10. Parker scored 11 in the second, tying the Bobcats’ team total in the quarter.
B-G was led by Trent Thornton’s 15 in the game as his went 7-for-10 at the foul line and drained two buckets from outside the 3-point arc.
Unadilla Valley held the 37-20 lead at the break but the Bobcats defense slowed down the Storm in the second half as their offense began to chip away at the deficit.
However, the early lead was enough for the Storm to come away with the MAC league win.
Bainbridge-Guilford’s Haiden Burns added 10 points and led the team with eight rebounds in the loss. Teammate Kolby Furgason hit three 3-pointers to score nine for the Bobcats while Michael Stevens tallied seven.
Unadilla Valley’s Devon Fairchild and Cameron Osborne each recorded six points in the win.
The Storm are set to host their annual Holiday Tournament. UV will take on Sherburne-Earlville in the first round at 6:15 p.m. on December 27.
Bainbridge-Guilford has the holiday break off and will take on non-league opponent Windsor January 2 at 7:15 p.m.
