City taking steps to prevent future flooding

NORWICH – Almost every year the city experiences serious flooding after a significant freeze. The drop in temperature allows ice dams to form in Canasawacta creek. This year the flooding happened earlier then expected, causing damage to homes and businesses.
According to Alderman Matthew Caldwell homes on Prentice Street and surrounding streets experienced flooding in their homes. Businesses were also impacted, including NAPA Auto, McCreedy Motors, and Chentronics.
“We were surprised about the early flooding. Lots of residents lost possessions and local businesses had some damage,” said Caldwell.
On December 17, at the city’s common council meeting a mayoral appointment was made to create a flood team committee to explore issues and gather facts for mitigation efforts to reduce the severity of flooding within the city.
The committee consists of Alderman Caldwell, Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, Emergency Medical Officer A Jones, representatives from effected local businesses, and representatives from each street that was impacted.
“At this point we’re still in the first stage, we're gonna try to get some folks involved that live in that neighborhood. We need to put our heads together to identify what the cause is and what options we have to resolve the problem,” said Caldwell.
He then stated that they are going to start investigating the issues as soon as possible, with hopes of having a solution before the spring thaw.
“I'm very optimistic we will create effective solutions,” said Caldwell.
