“Save a life” as your last act of 2019

Hugo is a beautiful 4-year-old domestic long hair. He was recently diagnosed with feline immunodeficiency virus and requires a very special person who will take the time to monitor his health. Your donations allow the Chenango SPCA to care for cats like Hugo instead of putting them down.

NORWICH – Before you start looking ahead to 2020, consider one final act of kindness to end your 2019.

Today is the last day to make a donation to the Chenango SPCA and have it matched by the Save A Life fundraiser sponsored by the Staffworks Fund.

The group will match every donation, dollar-for-dollar during December, up to $10,000 to the animal shelter. Once the amount is reached, Staffworks then donates an additional $1,000 for every $5,000 raised.

“We're hoping to exceed what we did last year which was about $60,000 with the match,” said Executive Director Annette Clarke. As of mid-December the shelter had raised about $56,000 with the match.

The money raised will be used to provide the no-kill shelter with things like food, medicine, and other supplies to keep animals happy and healthy.

“It's not just food, we use 70,000 pounds of litter a year. We go through about 1,500 rolls of paper towels a year,” said Clarke. The shelter costs $1,000 a day to run between supplies, staff, and overhead costs like heat and electricity.

Because the shelter has dedicated its-self to being no-kill, they are overloaded with cats according to Clarke. The Chenango SPCA can hold about 125 cats comfortably, however they currently have about 140 cats in the shelter plus a two wait lists according to Shelter Manager Kathy Wyder.

“We have two different waiting lists going. One for owner surrender animals and one for the surrender of stray animals. There are over 200 animals on these lists to come in the building,” said Wyder.

The best way to get your last minute donation matched is to donate to the Chenango SPCA on their website, chenangospca.org/donate.
