Oxford blanked in second quarter in loss
NORWICH – Facing the high-powered, fast-paced offense of the Elmira Express, the Norwich Lady Purple Tornado fell for just the second time this season Saturday evening, 71-50.
Coming into Saturday’s contest, the Express were ranked 13th in the New York State Girls Basketball rankings for Class AA while the home team sat at 10th in Class B.
Elmira, one of the few teams this season that has had an answer for Norwich’s in-your-face pressure, took control early as they broke the full-court defense with their quick ball-handing point guard Kiara Fisher.
Fisher, a senior of the Express who is off to play for the Lady Orange in Syracuse next season, found a teammate up the floor for a quick two points in the first quarter as Elmira went on a 21-8 run. The colleague she found most in the opening eight minutes was Zaira DeMember-Shazer – who is committed to Marist next year – as she scored 10 of her teams first stanza points.
Norwich received points from Mackenzie Hess, Margaret Dougher, Emily Evans and Emerson Burton in the first but together the four players combined for the eight points scored by the home team as several turnovers and missed opportunities as the rim plagued the Lady Tornado.
Sydney Coggins of Norwich found a rhythm in the second quarter as she knocked down back-to-back 3-point field goals, helping her team score double figures in the quarter and nearly matching Elmira point for point in the stanza. However, the Express went into the locker room leading by 16 points.
Out of the intermission, Norwich’s defense halted the Elmira team for a small stretch towards the end of the third but the Express went on an early run in the quarter as they scored 25 in the eight minutes of play.
The Tornado found their shot from behind the arc in the second half, sinking six of the nine made in the game in the third and fourth quarters. Abby Hansen and Dougher each made three in the contest as Hansen knocked down two in the third quarter while Dougher made two in the fourth.
The two led Norwich in the scoring column with 11 points apiece while Coggins finished with nine and Hess ended with seven.
The Tornado outscored the Express in the final quarter 18-12 to close out the game on a high-note.
Elmira’s Fisher ended with 13 while DeMember-Shazer tallied a game-high 19 points. Jea Abrams chipped in 11 while Morgan Gentile, another Division-I bound player on the roster, scored 10.
Norwich (4-2) returns to divisional play on Tuesday when they play host to Seton Catholic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
