Free Christmas tree disposal at local waste facilities
CHENANGO COUNTY – Now that the holiday season is behind us, it's time to put away the decorations, take down the lights, and dispose of your Christmas tree.
According to Chenango County Department of Public Works (DPW) Waste Management Program Assistant Dustin Hendricks, the county DPW is using discarded Christmas trees as a way to give back to their community.

“We shred them and then hand them out as compost and mulch free of charge to the community,” said Hendricks.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Christmas trees are often no longer watered after the holiday season, leaving them to dry out and become a fire risk. Fire departments across the U.S. respond to an average 160 home fires caused by Christmas trees every year.
Officials said this year to consider disposing of your tree by recycling it at one of the three solid waste facilities in Chenango County. The waste facilities will accept your Christmas tree free of charge. They will also accept non-foil wrapping paper and Christmas cards to be recycled with your regular junk mail and magazines.
The transfer stations are located on Route 12 in North Norwich, Coutermarsh Road in Brisben, and there is a landfill on County Road 47 in the town of Pharsalia.
