Lady Marauders fall short of comeback to conference foe Holland Patent
Oxford takes down Sidney in MAC matchup
HOLLAND PATENT – Nearly spoiling a milestone night for a player of the Holland Patent Golden Knights, the Lady Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville fought until the last minute of the contest as they fell by a final of 64-56 Monday night.
Needing just five points entering the game, Haedyn Roberts of the Lady Knights scored the 1,000th point of her career with 2:54 seconds left in the first quarter as her team held a large lead over the visiting Marauders.
At the end of the opening stanza, the home team finished with a 20-7 run. 12 points came from the LeMoyne-bound senior. However, S-E didn’t back down.
Battling limited bodies and foul trouble early, the Lady Marauders gradually chipped away the home team’s 13-point margin and brought the difference to as low as five. As Sherburne-Earlville inched closer, time expired and handed them the fifth loss of the season.
Following the first, Sherburne-Earlville made a small adjustment in order to get the ball into the middle of the Holland Patent zone defense. Receiving the ball through most of the second quarter was Maria Albertina. The post player paced S-E with nine points during the frame, one of which the Marauders outscored the Golden Knights 16-15 before the intermission.
Out of the break, the two teams went point for point as each tallied 18 in the third and Holland Patent continued to hold the double digit lead with one quarter of play remaining.
During the quarter, six of S-E’s eight players registered a basket for the balanced scoring.
In the final eight minutes, the Marauders’ offensive attack turned up a notch and they were able to cut the lead down to five with 1:18 left. Unfortunately, that was as close as Sherburne-Earlville was able to come in the Center State Conference divisional game as they fell by just eight points.
Albertina ended the night with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Teammate Tessa Cole led the Marauders with 22 points. The junior point guard for S-E also added seven assists and had a single turnover in the loss.
Roberts finished with a game-high 26 points on her special night and teammate Hanna Corrigan chipped in 14 points.
